A Running Commentary From Fans Of Women's Soccer Around The World

To the U.S. Women's Soccer Team:

You've heard it a million times, but it cannot be said enough:

THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

For all your hard work, dedication and sacrifice, thank you can never be enough. I truly believe you have changed the face of women's sports forever and that you have inspired young women everywhere to pursue their dreams with confidence and excellence. No longer will we have to stand in the shadows - but will stand proudly because you've all shown us what heroes really are about.

I wish you all every success, health and happiness always!

With best wishes,
Trish Nickles
Los Angeles, CA
P.S. Ms. Akers - I hope that you're feeling better and doing well.

I hope this finds its way into Ms. Chastain's hands. I applaud her actions on the field at the conclusion of the Women's World Cup final match against China. Ms. Chastain was acting out of sheer joy and elation and should not, in any way, be chastized for her actions. As she mentioned on television, men tennis players remove their shirts after a match and not a word is ever said. If showing your sports bra in public is a crime, I, along with many other women, are in trouble. I hardly think Ms. Chastain's actions constitute a "bad example" for little girls, as one mother mentioned. If anything, her hard work, dedication and willingness to be herself should be celebrated and it is sad that these qualities are seemingly overlooked by a few parents who choose only to see the negative. What example are they setting for their daughters?

Congratulations on your victory and capturing the cup. I attended the Chicago game, and I recently had my ACL replaced (for the second time, :) both knees). I had to attend that game in a wheelchair because it was only 5 days after my surgery. I just wanted you to know that was the most awesome thing I have ever been to, and I'm so happy that women's soccer has been recognized finally in the US. It's about time. I would like to wish you all congrats and good luck in the US Cup. I will be there. That is if I can skip class for a day or so. Yeah I'm sure I can. Anyway, congrats again. And Brandi, who cares what the press says, taking off your shirt was a great celebration...very spur of the moment!

Sincerely,
Caryn Hewitt

Congratulalions ladies! we are so proud of you! thanks for the wonderful effort that all of you gave. my daughter sara is 7 years old and has been playing for 2 years. we were glued to the tv over the last few weeks cheering for you guys, and she absolutely adores you all. even i, having grown up on football , baseball, and basketball, have to admit that i was quite taken with you too. i don't think i had ever watched a complete soccer match before this world cup, but you made what i had considerd a boring sport very exciting. forgive my ignorance, after learning more about the game i am becoming a big fan. you ladies are the best role models for sara we could hope for......wonderful athletes, lovely ladies, and champions who win with style, grace and and humility. keep up the great work! by the way, mia we love the commercials with jordan.........and tish, the backflips were almost as exciting as the goals that preceded them! brandi, michelle, joy, julie, briana, carla and everyone else....we love you all!

Robert Wysor

First of all congrats!!!More importantly...thank you...Thank you from all the twenty and thirty something women who played soccer for years and believed that they would never go any further with it because no one expected them to. I watched many of the games with my family. It was like I was back on the field and ten years old. The womens team gives young girls what players like myself never had...role models. It's really strange...I was talking to my mother and saying what if I grew up today instead of ten years ago...maybe I would have gone further as a female athlete. Instead I went to college, gave up soccer, started going to the gym, and that is that. No more team sports, no more tournaments, no more running around like a lunatic. Needless to say I miss it. In August I am starting medical school at Columbia and I'm glad to say I intend to start playing intramurals with the guys just like I did when I was seven years old and there were no girls teams. Thanks again and best of luck.

I look forward to seeing you in the pros

What you've done for American soccer is priceless ! You've dispelled the myth that high scores are essential to maintain excitement ! An American sports-jock myth ! The penalty kick result was proof that the excitement depended on fans who were completely focused on the team from beginning to the end - who were spellbound throughout the game by the beauty of the hard fought efforts by both teams. You guys were magnificent - Congratulations and THANKS - for your courage and strength and WHAT YOU'VE BROUGHT TO THE SPORT !!!

Congradulations on a well deserved victory. As a parent of three very sports minded children, of both sexes, you all have shown them that everyone can be a champ and that team spirit and cooperation makes a winning team. You all should be very proud of yourselves because all of America is.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Judi Gaynor

Congratulations to the team. It was a great effort and having played field hockey and lacrosse for four years in college I know the tension and jubilation that comes with an all out effort. I was very impressed with all the players and especially the way they all pulled together in the time of need. I am most excited for Surry who played the tournament of her life, having watched her at umass amherst it was quite a feeling to see her on the us team. I am so proud of the team and being a teacher of young girls and boys it is so important that they see this example of great sportsmanship and hard work. It is a glorious example of what all great qualities can bring in a world of sports that sometimes too often glamorizes the men, the salaries , the poor sportsmanship and the strikes. This was so refreshing and the response by the entire usa shows we all felt the same...win or lose , it wouldn't have mattered to me, but for the team I am psyched they were able to go the distance. please keep up the great work and promotions of women's athletics.

take care,
Wendy

Every member of the US Womens Soccer team deserves the appreciation of the sporting public. Their performance was outstanding. It is difficult to single out one player. If at all there was one, it was Michelle Akers. Her play was consistent throughout the World cup matches. She is the MVP of the World Cup. Mia Hamm was also consistent throughout the World Cup though not in terms of goals. Her speed, ball control and dribbling ability rate her above many of the Mens World Cup stars. Mention must be also made of Briana Scurrys outstanding performance in the Semifinal against Brazil and Kristin Lillys goal saving header that fetched the Cup to US.

My heart-felt congratulations to the Women Soccer Team, the Coaching Staff and Organizational Committee/s upon winning the World Cup of 1999. I sincerely hope that a new financial formula will now emerge as to make Soccer joyful for its players and management staff ,in the light of such a great event in the history of sports in the USA.

The 1999 Women Soccer Team deserves better treatment than our Ambassadors working overseas.

For this team exhibits best some other dimensions of the American civilization to the world that our Diplomats despite all the governmental supports have not been able to do.

Best Regards,
MidyF

Dear Ladies,

Congratulations on your winning the 1999 World Cup! Soccer, being the most popular sport in the world, needed to see how the US team was able to develop the skills, teamwork and excellent work ethic that has made you champions. You are good role models! Keep it up.

I enjoyed watching the finals against China and I do commend you for not giving up even when you looked tired during the second 15 minute extension. God bless you!

Wow! What a superb match! Your skill, tenacity and team play far exceeds that of many MSL teams I've seen lately! A few guys were talking about the match last Friday at work. My son asked me to tape it because he had to work the day of the final match. Between women's soccer and women's basketball, all of you have certainly help to put women's sports in a different category. It's about time!

Therese

To the USA Women's Soccer team - 1999 World Cup champs,

Way to go! You make all women and girls proud. My 7 yr. old daughter, Nicole loves soccer. I am sure she will be more inspired in her games this fall.

Again, our congratulations!

Sincerely,
Deborah Parma

To the entire team -

Congratulations on your win over China. I was more into that game then any sporting event I witnessed in my lifetime and I have seen many. To see such conditioned athletes perform with such tenacity was great fun. Thank you for providing many people the opportunity to witness what athletics is about. As an American I am very proud of you, but more then that you should be very proud of yourselves. What a show, I will never forget the moment.

Sincerely,
Ed McGreevey, D.D.S.
P.S. I too will have two fillings.

Thank you

I want to thank you for these three outstanding weeks of the Women's World Cup. You've managed to energize the entire nation -- including my heretofore soccer-ignorant parents!

You've got a great bunch of talented, intelligent, funny players that we can all be proud of.

After working in Ukraine (Dinamo!) for the past two years as a marketing consultant, I'm in the process of bringing over my fiancee who has a nine-year old daughter, Anya. I thank you for showing that this nation is so special that through your success and things like Title IX, we have a nation that can really help young women achieve just about anything they want, anywhere they want.

I so want to get Anya over here soon so she can begin benifitting right away from all the hard work and effort you guys have contibruted. Oh yeah, I miss Tania, her mother, too.

Thanks again. Great job! It was everything I hoped it would be, and more.

If you need any help setting up that professional womens league we're all eagerly awaiting, call me first. You've definitely got one devotee on board.

Sincerely,
Tom Richardson

The strength you provide

This note of Thanks is for the Women's World Cup Champs, United States...

As an 18 year old girl living on Long Island and diagnosed with Lupus, I had spent many days bedbound in pain. T.V. was the only link to the outside world and got boring after weeks of non-movement. A person with Lupus experiences entire body aches and the joint pain is unbearable. During this time in bed was when I became involved and interested in sports. I began watching Football, Hockey, and any other sport that was on T.V. (all male sports) Not for the competition between the 2 teams, but competition for myself. As I watched the strength and power of the athletes, I was overwhelmed with the determination to get well. I remember thinking, "look at these players getting tackled, checked, and run over by others, look at their endurance and power they exemplify. If they can train that hard to be pro athletes, than I can try to sit up in bed for a few minutes". Eventually, I began eating at the dinner table again, and carrying on with my life as an 18 year old. SPORT and my own determination gave me the inner strength to overcome a horrible illness. I kept pushing myself to do things that doctors thought were impossible. I astonished everyone. My point is, I only had male athletes to look up to, because only male sports were televised. BUT, reality is I am a FEMALE. It never bothered me to watch male sports because I found significance in watching for my own health outcome, but now I am so happy that women's sports are beginning to gain acceptance and media time. I had the ability to use sports to regain my health, however many females I believe are bored by male sports because they can not relate. Now, with the hype of Women's Soccer and the WNBA, I am glad females have women's teams to look up to and admire. You never know, you just may help a person find the inner strength to fight a disease one day.

I rarely have any effects of the Lupus these days (thank god) but on occassion I do feel a sudden pain in the muscles or joints. I am proud to say the next time I do feel a Lupus discomfort coming on I will think of July 10, 1999 and envision the power you all exerted on the field to achieve your goal of the Women's World Cup. And for this, I would like to Thank You! I am happy to report, I am now 25 years old and a successful Registered Dietitian. I LOVE Life, still live on Long Island and still LOVE sports.

Congratulations,
Theresa Romano, R.D.

UNBELIEVABLE

CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM USA ON AN UNBELIEVABLE GAME FROM YOUR LOYAL SOCCER FANS- VALLEY STREAM (NY) STORM GIRLS U17. YOU MAKE US VERY PROUD!

SoccrMom25@aol.com

I am so excited for the women's soccer team. I am sure this will not be read, but I will write anyway. I recently graduated from the University of West Florida. I played on the varsity team for 3 years. I was the "Rudy" of the team. This didn't bother me because soccer gave me a chance to meet great friends and it kept me focused in school. In high school it saved my life. I was heading down the wrong track my freshman year and I turned my life around. I am now a Special Ed. Teacher at an inner city school. I am a minority and I am hoping to start a team for some of the kids who will not get an opportunity to play on a rec. league. ( If you have any advice Briona it will be greatly appreciated.)

The game was unbelievable!! I am so mad about people making such an issue about Brandy taking off her shirt. BIG DEAL!! It is so silly how people can take a good thing and find something to be petty about. Keep up the great work!! For those who are going back to school good luck, moms have fun being moms, wives have fun, and everyone else have fun too. Mia military life isn't fun, I hope your husband will be home soon. I remember seeing you when you practiced at our field in Pensacola. That was pretty awesome.

Take care!! Keep on being great role models.

You guys will be in my prayers always!! ( Michelle I hope you start to feel better)
