spacer U.S. Under-16 National Team in U.S. Soccer Festival '99 in Portland, Oregon

Three of U.S. Soccer's top youth national teams: Under-18 Men, Under-17 Men and Under-16 Women will compete in the United States Amateur Soccer Association's "U.S. Soccer Festival '99" next week in Portland, Oregon. The fourth annual tournament, which includes men's and women's teams from all four USASA regions, will be staged from August 2- 7, with all games played at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center. Each U.S. national team will play a total of four games on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Recognizing the need to continue the development of young American players and needing a forum to identify other up-and-coming players, the United States Amateur Soccer Association has developed this event to serve those needs through its partnership with the United States Soccer Federation and a grant from the U.S. Soccer Foundation.

The U.S. Amateur Soccer Festival was originally conceived when the Unites States Olympic Committee (USOC) discontinued the staging of their annual U.S. Sports Festival in 1995. The U.S. Amateur Soccer Festival, which is sponsored and organized by the USASA, has incorporated the concept used in the U.S. Sports Festival and has expanded it to also include several U.S. National Teams and, for the first time in the tourney's history, an international entry Canada's Under-17 Men's National Team.

The first U.S. Amateur Soccer Festival was held in San Antonio in August of 1996, with the tournament moving on to Blaine, Minn., in 1997 and Manchester, N.H., in 1998.

Tickets for the event are on sale now and may be purchased locally at Fred Meyer stores or through the Oregon Amateur Soccer Association at (503) 292-1814. Ticket prices are: $5 (adults) and $3 (children).

U.S. Under-16 National Team

The U.S. Under-16 Women's National Team are coached by former U.S. Women's National Team star April Heinrichs. The U-16s finished third in their last competition, the United States Youth Soccer Association's Olympic Development Program international tournament in February. Look for defender Jessica Ballwig, midfielder Susan Flamini and forward Lindsay Tarpley as the team tries to maintain the success of their Women's National Team' role models.

Coach: DICICCO Tony (USA)

Starting U.S. defender Kate Sobrero twists her right ankle in practice

There was no contact when she went up to head the ball during the scrimmage today and twisted her ankle as she came down. She has a Grade I ankle sprain and X-rays showed no fracture. U.S. Team Doctor Mark Adams will make a determination on her status for tomorrow's game against Nigeria after seeing how she responds to treatment. She has not been ruled out of the match.

U.S. National Team Coach Tony DiCicco talked about possible replacements for Kate Sobrero "We have a lot of other options with Sara Whalen, Christie Pearce, Lorrie Fair or anyone else on this team. We have good depth at that position. Kate has been playing great and we hope that it is not a serious injury but it would have been a miracle to go the entire tournament with the same lineup so we have been mentally prepared for an event like this. Regardless, I have not made a decision yet."

On Christie Pearce:
"Christie has been playing solid for us. She has learned the outside and inside defensive positions well and is one of our best athletes on the team and definitely one of the fastest. She has a great long service out of the back and she can be a good option for us in this situation."

On Sara Whalen:
"Sara is also one of our fastest players and is one of the fastest players I have ever seen coming forward with the ball. We would be able to use her speed against a team like Nigeria." "

U.S. Coach and players comment on match against Nigeria.

Head Coach Tony DiCicco
Match
"Clearly a big game for both teams and will be hotly contested. If we get three points we are in the second round and we qualify for the Olympics and I know that is how Nigeria is looking at it as well. Nigeria has improved technically over the years and they have better soccer players than they have ever had before. They have improved tremendously since 1995 and that is great for the game. Nigeria is a soccer country with a lot of tradition and the women are gaining recognition as well."

Nigeria's Speed
"It's not like we haven't played against teams with speed before. Denmark had two very fast players, but the difference with Nigeria is they have speed all over the field. We are prepared to deal with it. We need to be very organized on defense to help contain them, but it is a two way street because they have to deal with containing us as well."

Sell Out Crowd Tomorrow in Chicago
"It will be very moving for us as it was at the opener at Giants Stadium. These crowds have been very impressive to us. Having a sold out crow in a great soccer city like Chicago is going to help us. This event is really catching on in the main stream of the America."

David Letterman's Recent Support for the USA Squad
"Dave has picked up a strong interest in the team and the team has picked up strong interest in Dave. He has been having a lot of fun with the tournament and the team and it sounds like they want to do some more with us during the event, but as much as I would like to meet David Letterman we still have to stay very focused on winning games."

Mia Hamm's comments
What the Team needs to do against Nigeria to succeed
"We need to possess the ball well tomorrow night. We need to pick our times, and not rush anything. We have to have a very strong game as a team."

Tiffeny Milbrett's comments
The Game Against Nigeria
"You are going to see a different team on the field for the U.S. on Thursday. It is so important for us to get the first match out of the way after months and months of anticipation. We just needed to get it out of our systems and in the first game we let our nerves get the better of us in the first half."

Nigeria
"They play a lot like their men's team, they are very clever with the ball and we've learned from watching them that we have to stay organized as a team and absorb their attack. We can't let them get numbers on us when they attack."

Co-Captain Carla Overbeck
Nigeria's Mercy Akide
"Mercy has great skills and is very good on the ball and she is helped greatly by her teammates making great runs off the ball as well. She is very strong in the air and scrappy. We just need to play our game."

Nigeria
"Nigeria is a very good soccer country and their team is very athletic and fast. Their speed up top makes them very dangerous.""

Twenty player roster announced for USA versus Mexico game at the Rose Bowl.

WSW Commentary
Expect to see a different Mexico Team than the one seen in the previous three one sided games playerd against the USA. With at least three U.S. College players taking out Mexican citizenship recently, the side should be more compact. On the other hand the U.S. Team has prepared for the "Road to Pasadena" in great style at the Algarve Cup, and appears to be more focussed and ready than ever. With tough competition amongst the players for places on the final roster all the "roadgames" will be in earnest.

The U.S. Women's National Team will play its first-ever match at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., against Mexico on Sunday, March 28. The USA-Mexico match will be followed by a MLS game between Los Angeles Galaxy and the Dallas Burn.

"Starting with the 'Nike Road to Pasadena' there will be less and less players brought into the mix as we try to pare down to our final Women's World Cup roster of 20 players and train that team," said U.S. Head Coach DiCicco. "These games are key to us fine tuning and preparing for the biggest challenge that this team has ever faced. I can tell you there is a lot of excitement from the U.S. players and staff as we get within 90 days of the Women's World Cup Opening Game at Giants Stadium."

The U.S. team arrives in Los Angeles on Friday, March 26, and will practice at Occidental College at 4:30 p.m. The team will train on Saturday, March 27, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at the Rose Bowl, followed by the Mexican National Team at 3 p.m. That will be the only practice for Mexico in Los Angeles.

After the match on March 28, the team will take part in a Women's World Cup promotion at the Rose Bowl on Monday, and go to the ARCO Olympic Training Center in San Diego for two days of training on Tuesday and Wednesday.

U.S. Team Roster Named For FIFA World Star Game

The U.S. Women's National Team roster for its historic match against the FIFA World Stars was announced today at a Women's World Cup press briefing in San Jose, Calif., site of the Women's World All-Star Match and the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup Final Draw on Feb. 14, 1999.

Forward Mia Hamm and midfielder Michelle Akers headline a U.S. roster that features 13 members of the 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning team. They will be joined by five players with San Francisco/Bay Area ties in former Stanford University star Julie Foudy, Santa Clara University alum and Santa Clara resident Brandi Chastain, and UC Berkeley graduate Joy Fawcett, as well as Los Altos resident Lorrie Fair and San Ramon resident Tiffany Roberts, both of whom attend North Carolina.

"The All-Star Match is a tribute to the best players in the world from both teams and what they have accomplished," said U.S. Head Coach Tony DiCicco. "It is not a win-at-all-costs game, but knowing my team and the pride of these international stars, I expect it to be a passion-filled game with each player trying to show their special talents. I know the game will be extremely entertaining. But the real excitement lies in the Final Draw and finding out who we will play and how difficult each group will be."
