Spartan Stadium, San Jose, California

San Jose lies between the Santa Cruz Range in the west, and the Mount Hamilton Range in the east. Founded in 1777 as Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, to raise crops and cattle to feed soldiers at the nearby presidios of San Francisco and Monterey, it was California's oldest civil settlement under Spanish rule.

Today it has grown from those agricultural beginnings to be known worldwide as "the Capital of Silicon Valley" because of the area's many high technology companies. It has grown to become the 11th largest city in the nation, and the third largest in California. Almost 50 wineries can be found in the area with two in San Jose itself. Its 125 parks and public gardens encourage hiking, jogging, horseback riding, or strolling. Activities available include museums such as the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, theater, ballet, symphony orchestra, the largest open air flea market in the United States, and the largest theme park in northern California.

The average annual temperature is 70F and the city enjoys more than 280 sunny days per year. Twenty miles of a modern light rail transit system makes it easy to travel from San Jose's residential and shopping areas to airport, theme park and convention centers.

Spartan Stadium is the home of the men's Major League Soccer team "The Clash." In 1997 over 17,000 fans cheered as they watched the U.S. Women's National Team beat England.
