Game

Two goals and one assist from forward Shannon MacMillan helped the San Diego Spirit defeated the Philadelphia Charge, 3-1, in the first match for both teams at WUSA Spring Training Tournament.

MacMillan opened the scoring in just the 8th minute, running onto a through ball and rushing in one-on-one on Charge goalkeeper Saskia Webber. Webber got a piece of MacMillan's first shot, but she ran down the rebound in the right side of the penalty box and chipped the ball into the open net from 14 yards out at a stiff angle. The Charge tied the game just two minutes into the second half on a well-struck shot from Rakel Karvelsson that scooted past Spirit goalkeeper Melissa Moore. Karvelsson left the game in the 52ndmminute after suffering a hard foul from San Diego's Mercy Akide.

The Spirit put the game away with two goals in the final 15 minutes, both courtesy of MacMillan. In the 76th minute, Shannon Boxx unlocked the Charge defense with a perfect through ball and MacMillan slide to finish into theleft corner. In the 87th minute, MacMillan beat her player down the right flank, cut towards goal and then played a perfect pass in the slot to Tara Koleski, who easily finished into the right corner of the net from eight yards out. The goals gave MacMillan seven in the pre-season and raised the Spirit's record to 2-1. Twin sisters Jennifer Tietjen of the Charge and Margaret Tietjen of the Spirit played against each other in a professional game for the first time.

The Charge had a great chance to score in the 69th minute, but Spirit midfielder Sherrill Kester cleared Mandy Clemen's shot off the goal line. MacMillan has another great chance in the 74th minute, but her shot went wide on her breakaway. The Spirit will face the Carolina Courage in its next exhibition game on Sunday, March 25 at Noon at the OTC.
