Germany's
2001 Player of the Year Birgit Prinz signed by Carolina Courage
Prinz
scored 38 goals in only 88 appearances for her country, and ranks
fourth all-time in career goals and sixth all-time in national team
appearances for Germany. Last season, Prinz scored 24 goals and
helped Frankfurt capture both the German League and German Cup titles.
"Birgit
is clearly one of the elite players ever in the women's game,"
said WUSA VP of Player Personnel Lauren Gregg. "We are ecstatic
that she will play for the Carolina Courage in 2002. Most importantly,
we are proud that she will join the WUSA and help us accomplish
our goal to be the world's best soccer league."
"This
is, for me, an enormous sports challenge," said Prinz. "I
very much look forward to my adventure in the USA."
The
addition of Birgit Prinz to Danielle Fotopoulos and Hege Riise should
help the Courage where they need help the most.
"This
is a tremendous day for the Courage," said Carolina Courage
Head Coach Marcia McDermott. "Birgit Prinz is a proven international
goal scorer, and certainly one of the world's top players. Our fans
are going to enjoy every minute that they watch this woman play.
Of course, this [acquisition] addresses an enormous need of the
team. It's exciting!"
Prinz
joins the Courage at the conclusion of FFC Frankfurt's involvement
in the European Club Championship. As always her signing is contingent
on the finalization of her official work visa.
