Iverson, Dion and Smith selected by Philadelphia
charge in WUSA waiver draft
There could
be another Iverson playing professional ball in Philadelphia. Former
University of Massachusetts All-American defender Erica Iverson
was among three players chosen today by the Philadelphia Charge
in the Women's United Soccer Association Waiver Draft.
Also selected
to join Philadelphia's training camp roster are goalkeeper Danielle
Dion from UMass and forward Gayle Smith out of the University of
Virginia. The three additions bring the roster up to 23 players
as the team continues workouts for the inaugural season of the WUSA.
Philadelphia has four upcoming exhibition matches at the WUSA Preseason
Tournament in Chula Vista, Calif., before cutting the roster to
20 on April 2.
Iverson starred
at Massachusetts from 1994-98 and was a first team All America selection
following her senior season. Iverson spent the last two summers
with the Boston Renegades of the W-League and was named team MVP
and an All-Star in 1999.
Dion, who
began training camp with the Boston Breakers, played at Umass from
1994-98, and earned W-League Goalkeeper of the Year honors the last
two summers while playing with the Chicago Cobras.
Smith, who
made two appearances with the United States National Team in 1992,
had been with the Washington Freedom. She played for the Washington
Mustangs of the men's USISL in 1995.
