Liu Ailing is WUSA Player of the week
Philadelphia
Charge midfielder Liu Ailing who scored her first two goals of the
season in Sunday's exciting 3-2 road victory over the Boston Breakers,
today was named the WUSA Player of the Week for the period ending
May 2, 2001.
Soon after
Boston had taken the lead 1-0, Liu evened the score in the 36th
minute with a scintillating 35-yard shot into the upper right corner
of the net. The score remained the same until Liu struck again,
this time on a breakaway in the 77th minute as she managed to slip
the ball past Breakers goalkeeper Tracy Ducar in a one-on-one situation.
A starter on
the China National Team since 1987, Liu finished Sunday's match
with a Charge season high of five shots and five shots on goal.
Thanks to her, Philadelphia (3-1-2, 11 points) pulled into a tie
with the Washington Freedom for second place in the WUSA just one
point behind the Atlanta Beat.
Liu and the
Charge begin an important home-and-home series with Mia Hamm and
the Washington Freedom at 7:05 p.m. this Thursday at RFK Stadium.
The teams then square off again in Philadelphia at Villanova Stadium
on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. Thursday's match will be televised locally
by CN8, while Sunday's game can be seen on Comcast SportsNet.
The first
6,000 fans at Sunday's match will receive a free Got Milk poster
of either midfielder Lorrie Fair or goalkeeper Saskia Webber. A
special collector's poster featuring Charge defender Heather Mitts
and Hamm will also be handed out courtesy of the Philadelphia Inquirer's
Newspapers In Education program.
