Julie Foudy scores her first WUSA goal in San Diego win over Philadelphia

May 19, 2002 - Torero Stadium

Philadelphia, the highest scoring team in the WUSA, was shut out for the first time this season. The Charge had not scored less than two goals in each of the club's four previous matches. Philadelphia's high-scoring midfielder/forward Kelly Smith had her seven-game regular season point-scoring streak snapped.

Foudy scored the first goal of her WUSA career when she headed home a Shannon MacMillan freekick in the 43rd minute. MacMillan struck a curving freekick from the right flank that found Foudy at the far post for a low header past Philadelphia goalkeeper Melissa Moore. It was Foudy's first goal in 25 career WUSA matches.

Both squads had numerous chance early on as San Diego's three forward lineup caused problems for Philadelphia and the Charge nearly converted on two scrambles in front of the goal that were saved by goal mouth blocks by the Spirit defense.

A recharged Philadelphia squad came out gunning at the start of the second half, but the Charge could not convert on numerous chances, including a missed sitter by Marinette Pichon in the 49th minute. Jenny Benson had sent in a cross from the left that San Diego's Amy Sauer misplayed, and Pichon pushed the ball wide right as she was falling back from 10 yards out.

San Diego's defense regrouped, and Philadelphia's remaining second-half chances were easily saved by Spirit goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo, who made six saves on the evening, while recording her first shutout of the 2002 campaign.

It was San Diego's first victory over Philadelphia in four all-time meetings.
