San Diego Spirit head coach Carlos Juarez and his staff to evaluate 20 players this weekend at an invitation-only local tryout

San Diego Spirit head coach Carlos Juarez and his staff to evaluate 20 players this weekend at an invitation-only local tryout with the goal of selecting three-to-four players to attend the Spirit Pre-Season Training Camp that begins on March1.

The camp will run Friday through Sunday at the ARCO Olympic Training Center with practice sessions and scrimmages planned for Juarez to get one last look at potential talent before he starts pre-season training.

Former stars from San Diego State, the University of San Diego, the University of California-San Diego, Arizona State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Pomona, the University of New Mexico, UC Irvine, UCLA, the University of Portland, BYU and Colorado College will be among those trying out.

Juarez currently has 24 players on his pre-season roster and is allowed to begin official pre-season training on March 1 with 28. He will train that group of 28 players until March 18, when he will cut at least four players, and perhaps as many as eight. Juarez is allowed to enter WUSA Pre-Season Training Camp at the OTC on March 21 with a maximum of 24 players, but as few as 20.

The WUSA will hold a waiver draft on March 20, as any players released by their teams will be eligible to be picked up by another WUSA team.

On April 1, Juarez will pare his roster down to the final 20 players in preparation for the season opening game.
