San
Diego to go to Bay Area for Benefit Match for Red Cross at Stanford's
New Maloney Field
San
Diego Spirit will play its first official exhibition match of the
off-season on Nov. 8, 2001at Bay Area to take on the WUSA champion
Bay Area CyberRays. All proceeds from the game will benefit the
Palo Alto Chapter of the American Red Cross. The match between California's
two WUSA sides will kick off under the lights at 7:00 p.m. at Stanford's
New Maloney Field.
There
will be no admission charged for the match, but donations to the
American Red Cross will be solicited from all fans.
The
match comes at the end of the Spirit's two week mini-camp being
held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California
from Oct. 27-Nov. 11th.
Spirit
captain Julie Foudy, a former Stanford All-American and the greatest
player in the history of the Cardinal program, will return to play
a match at her college for only the second time since her senior
season in 1992. Foudy will play her first ever game at the New Maloney
Field where the Stanford men's and women's teams currently play
their matches.
"As
players and as a team, we all want to do our part to help and donating
the revenues of this match to the Palo Alto American Red Cross is
one of the best ways to do it," said Foudy. "We want to
thank the CyberRays for inviting us to play, and I know the fans
will get to see another exciting game in what is developing into
a great rivalry. I don't get to go back to Stanford very often,
so it will be a fun to see some of my old friends and be on campus
again . Even though it's the off-season, every game is a test and
it will be good to see where we are as a team. There is no better
way to do that than by playing the league champions."
