WUSA appoints
Tony DiCicco as acting commisioner
John S. Hendricks,
Acting CEO and Chairman of the WUSA Board of Governors, announced
that Tony DiCicco and Lee Berke have been appointed to the positions
of Acting Commissioner and Acting President for the league, which
begins play in April 2001.
Spencer Stuart
Inc., the global executive search firm, has been retained to conduct
the search for the hiring of a CEO and Commissioner. Senior Partners,
James M. Citrin, Robert A. Damon and Jed Hughes of Spencer Stuart
Inc., will lead the search.
Berke and DiCicco,
both of whom have been serving as consultants to the WUSA, will
report directly to Mr. Hendricks. Berke's responsibilities will
encompass all aspects of the WUSA's off-field business operations,
including administration, advertising, marketing, public relations,
sponsorship, television and team issues. DiCicco, the former coach
of the U.S. Women's National Team, will serve as an overall ambassador
to the soccer community, overseeing all on field related operations
for the WUSA.
DiCicco, has
been an integral factor in the development and success of women's
soccer in the United States. He became the U.S. National Women's
coach in 1994 and guided the team to victory in the 1999 World Cup
Championship and 1996 Olympic Gold Medal. DiCicco also played five
years of professional soccer in the American Soccer League with
the Connecticut Wildcats and Rhode Island Oceaneers.
