Players in Philadelphia Charge Team make waves around the world
Philadelphia
Charge defender Jenny Benson picked up her first career cap
with the U.S. National Team when she replaced starter Michelle French
in the 69th minute of the 1-0 loss in Panyu.
Charge midfielder
Lorrie Fair, was one of the few U.S. National Team veterans on the
trip and with Milbrett anchored the team for the many young and
inexperienced players in the National Team. She iimproved her career
totals to 87 caps and 53 starts since her debut in 1996. Charge
midfielder Liu Ailing, was not on the China roster since they were
also playing their young and inexperienced players.
Five Philadelphia
Charge players will play on the Elite team at the Umbro Select All-Star
Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday, February 3, 2001.
The Elite team consists of 19 college seniors picked in the WUSA
Combine Draft and will include goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Stanford),
defenders Jenny Benson (Nebraska), Kalli Kamholz (North Carolina),
midfielder Raven McDonald (North Carolina) and forward Ruth Van't
Land-Parkes (Cal Poly Pomona).
A total of
48 undrafted college seniors will form three teams and play games
from February1-2 in front of WUSA team coaches and scouts. The Elite
team will then play the best of the undrafted players on February
3rd at 6:00 p.m.
Following
the Elite match, the Women's International Celebrity game will
take place at 8:00 p.m., as Charge goalkeeper Saskia Webber and
forward
Kelly Smith are scheduled to take part in the match that pits a
group of
WUSA players against international stars.
WUSA will
conduct a four-round draft from Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, February
4, that focuses primarily on the undrafted college seniors.
