Carolina wins at home against New York

Carolina 4 New York 1

SAS Stadium , Cary, North Carolina
Saturday, June 1, 2002
The game was delayed for 45 minutes because of heavy rain and dangerous lighting. SAS Stadium lost its power and lights briefly.

The Power began the game on the defensive but the Courage broke through in the 44th minute when a poorly cleared ball went to Danielle Fotopoulos who fed Unni Lehn for her first goal of the season and career. The Power finished the half without a corner kick and only one shot on goal against Carolina's five shots on goal, and six corner kicks.

The second half was not much better for a defensive minded Power when Danielle Slaton scored her first goal of the season and career for the Courage inside the penalty area in the 60th minute. The goal was unassisted.
Brigit Prinz appearing in her first WUSA game for the Courage scored two minutes later on an assist from Unni Lehn.

Tiffeny Milbrett answered in the 66th minute with her fourth goal of the season off a ball from Tammy Pearman. The Power subbed in midfielders Katie Tracy and Krista Davey and forwards Minna Mustonen and Wynne McIntosh but to no avail. Carolina's final score came in the 73rd minute
with a goal by Fotopoulos off an assist from Hege Riise.

"Anytime you take away someone like Jen Lalor, who has been in there for the past year and a half, it is tough to replace her and keep the same level of play," said Power co-captain Tiffeny Milbrett

The Power are back in action on Sunday, June 9 when they host the Atlanta Beat at Mitchel Field at 6pm. The game will be televised on MSG network.
