Spirit 4-0 over Cal-Berkeley in final pre-season game

San Diego Spirit used goals from four different players to win its pre-season finale, 4-0, over the visiting University of California-Berkeley Golden Bears at UCSD's Warren Field on Saturday.

The first half-hour of the match was even, but in the 31st minute Traci Arkenberg broke the scoreless game with a goal off an assist from Jen Mascaro. Arkenberg finishes the pre-season with a four-game goal streak. The pair would team up again for the Spirit's second goal in the 49th minute, as Arkenberg returned the favor to Mascaro. The best goal of the match came in the 59th minute when Shannon Boxx headed in a Fan Yunjie cross from the right side. Mercy Akide, who has a two-game goal streak, ended the match with an unassisted 90th-minute marker. Goalkeeper Carly Smolak made one save and recorded the shutout win in her first start for the Spirit.

San Diego, preparing for its inaugural match on Sunday, April 22 against the Philadelphia Charge at USD's Torero Stadium, finished the pre-season with a 5-4 record. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets and come to the stadium early for all of the opening day festivities.
