New York at home suffers first loss to Boston

New York 1 Boston 2

The Boston Breakers recorded their first victory in team history over the New York Power, 2-1, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY. The Breakers used a goal in the 88th minute to take the lead and held off the Power for the win. The Breakers game-winning goal came when Sara Yohe grabbed a loose ball in the PowerÕs box and crossed it to a wide open Dagny Mellgren. Mellgren put the ball in the roof of the net, beating Saskia Webber for her second goal on the night.

The Breakers took an early lead when Maren Meinert snuck a pass to Mellgren who slipped the ball past a helpless Webber to take the 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

The Power would come back quickly with a goal in the 26th minute after Tiffeny Milbrett slid a pass through the Breaker defense to send Anita Rapp 1v.1 with Breaker keeper Karina LeBlanc. Rapp slotted her shot past LeBlanc, for her second goal on the season, tying the game at one apiece.

The Power had many offensive chances but were unable to convert. Rapp had a chance in the 67th minute toput the Power up a goal, but her header off a corner kick from Milbrett was inches wide of the right post from three yards out. The Power were not hurting for offensive action as they tallied 12 corners in the game.

"Definitely there were a couple of good shots that I thought were goals and we all thought were goals. Definitely she (Karina LeBlanc) made it hard for us," stated Power captain Tiffeny Milbrett.

"We've been trying to give them more scoring opportunities during practice. I think any coach will tell you that it's more practicing chances than practicing scoring those chances,Ó added Power Head Coach Pat Farmer."

The Power racked up 15 shots, nine on goal with Milbrett finishing the game with no recorded shots, the first of her Power career. The Breakers had 12 shots, four on goal, but were able to capitalize on their chances.

The Power are back in action at home this weekend, May 25th as they take on the San Diego Spirit. The game kicks off at 4 pm and is the PAX TV game of the week.
