Foudy, MacMillan andAkide score as the Spirit shut out Beijing

Julie Foudy, Shannon MacMillan and "Marvelous" Mercy Akide score as the Spirit shutout Beijing F.C.3-0 Sunday.

Foudy began the scoring with a goal in the 4th minute when Erica Strey's header was blocked by Beijing goalkeeper Cao Yuo, Foudy controlled the rebound and calmly slotted the ball from five yards away.

Ten minutes later, MacMillan collected a pass in the midfield, passed it back to Foudy, who then chipped the ball over the last defender allowing MacMillan to convert on her breakaway chance. MacMillan buried a 16-yard blast.

Akide made her presence known with a goal in the 79th minute, she now has two goals in her two second-half appearances. Akide's shot deep from within Beijing F.C. territory was knocked in by Shang Shan.

Melissa Moore played the entire match in goal and made five saves to preserve the shutout.

"It was good that we were able to play a team like Beijing F.C. today," said Spirit head coach Carlos Juarez. "It allowed us to do some things with our formations and to see some players before the cut-down date." Juarez is referring to the March 18 deadline to trim the team's roster the current 28 to 24 players.
