CHARGE lose exhibition game to Beijing

Philadelphia
Charge lost a hard-fought 2-1 exhibition game to Beijing F.C. Friday
night at Rancho Capistrano, the Charge's training camp site in San
Juan Capistrano, Calif. The Charge were not able to score until
the 85th minutewhen forward Kelly Smith converted a penalty kick.
Beijing had built a 2-0 advantage with goals in the 35th and 70th
minutes, while clearing three balls off the goal line.
"This game
was a very good learning experience for us," said Charge head coach
Mark Krikorian. "There were a lot of positives and it's a good foundation
for us to build on. The score doesn't matter to me, how we played
is important."
Starting for
the Charge were forwards Smith and Deidre Enos; midfielders Lorrie
Fair, Mandy Clemens, Liu Ailing and Laurie Schwoy; defenders Jenny
Benson, Kalli Kamholz, Doris Fitschen and Heather Mitts; and goalkeeper
Carly Smolak.
Jennifer Soileau
replaced Schwoy in the 30th minute; Jennifer Tietjen, SarahYohe
and Rakel Karvelsson started the second half for Fitschen, Enos
and Fair, respectively; and Raven McDonald came on for Clemens in
the 55th minute. Goalkeeper Saskia Webber and midfielder Rebekah
McDowell sat out due to quadriceps injuries. Beijing, Liu's former
club team, had already played exhibitions against the Bay Area CyberRays
and New York Power.
Roster
moves
Philadelphia reduced its roster by waiving goalkeepers Laurie Pells
and Angela Harrison, midfielder Tracey Spinelli and forwards Beth
Keller andCourtney Saunders. The Charge also announced that midfielder
Laurie Hillhas decided to leave camp. The roster now stands at 20
players - four under the league limit - heading into Tuesday's WUSA
waiver draft.
