A
tragic loss for women's soccer
WSW is sad to hear of the loss of Jamie Hemingway, 29 of Parkville and
players Melanie Meyer, 18, of Independence, and Cynthia Anderson, 18,
of Grimes, Iowa. They died in an automobile accident on Thursday, November
9, 2000. They were on the way to Park University's NAIA Playoff game.
Hemingway, the women's soccer coach at Park University in Parkville, Mo.,
was driving eastbound on Interstate 70 with four team members of his soccer
team. They were traveling to a postseason soccer game in St. Louis when
Hemingway swerved to avoid a tractor-trailer that had crossed the centerline,
crowding Hemingway's car into the median. Hemingway lost control of the
vehicle on an icy patch and was then hit head-on by a westbound vehicle.
Hemingway had spent
his young life giving to the soccer family, including coaching the W-League
Fort Collins Force to a 1998 W-2 National Championship. He had coached
the women's soccer team at Park University for three years.
We would like to
join the soccer community in extending our sympathies to all three families
