Shannon MacMillan out for several months with ACL tear

An MRI on the right knee of MacMillan confirmed a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. putting the San Diego Spirit striker out for the remainder of the 2003 WUSA season. The non-contact injury occurred eight minutes into the Spirit's match against the Boston Breakers last night at Torero Stadium as she was going for a ball, planted her right leg and the knee buckled. her knee. In addition she suffered a partial tear of her medial collateral ligament and some mild cartilage damage.

"I can speak for the whole team when I say that we are very disappointed for Shannon that the injury comes at this time in her long and illustrious career," said U.S.National Team Head Coach April Heinrichs. "The most difficult thing to swallow is that she is playing the best soccer of her career."

An ACL injury normally carries a minimum six-month rehabilitation period.
