on the U.S. Teams's performance at the Nordic Cup and other results By
Thorsten Frennstedt There
is no doubt that the US team was the very best out of the eight U -21
teams in the 2001 Nordic Cup in Norway. It was very obvious during the 6-1-final against Sweden. “It
was a hard experience for our girls
to play a team of
future world class players. The Americans are very well trained, strong
and speedy. They were simply too heavy a task for us,” Sweden´s
Head Coach Helena Kihlberg Bystedt declared. “If we had been able to keep them
1-2 for some minutes longer maybe we would have fought better,
but the 1-3 just one minute later was crucial for us. I was impressed
with how strong the Americans are in the air battles, and the two rocket
headers by Anne Morell were especially gritty.” Norway
lost on Penalty Kicks against Denmark and became the last team in the
tournament, a highly unexpected defeat on home soil. It
was the first time ever that Finland finished ahead of Germany after winning
the Bronze Medal Final by 3-2. There was a lot of pressure on the Germans
to win the Nordic Cup, for they would have made history if all their women’s
national teams had won all the championships in
one year.
