24 player National Team pool to train in Chicago before selection of 18 players for 2001 Nike Cup National Team Head Coach Heinrichs will train 24 players for four days before selecting 18 players to face Germany on Sept. 9 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. The match against China marks the first meeting between the two teams on American soil since the historic Women's World Cup Final on July 10, 1999. Heinrichs named nine players from that match, including Brandi Chastain, who converted the now legendary final penalty kick. "What you're going to see with this roster is great diversity and the immediate impact of the WUSA," said Heinrichs. "The WUSA is helping develop some of the top players in America and increase the depth of the pool. I can now say we have six goalkeepers, a dozen or so defenders, the same number of midfielders and at least eight forwards. It's a great position for me to know the depth chart at every position because I am seeing it for myself in an active league." Included in the 19 WUSA players named to the roster are the top two scorers from the 2001 season in Tiffeny Milbrett of the New York Power with 16 goals, and Shannon MacMillan of the San Diego Spirit with 12 goals. Heinrichs also called in Mia Hamm, and Kristine Lilly, U.S. captain Julie Foudy, plus Joy Fawcett, Lorrie Fair, Cindy Parlow and Kate Sobrero. Five players are currently beginning their college seasons. Hope Solo, Cat Reddick , Jena Kluegel , Aleisha Cramer, and Abby Wambach. Heinrichs also called in a number of players who impressed during the inaugural WUSA season, some with past international experience, and others who will be getting their first taste of national team competition.
