USA hypnotized by Iceland's bunker defense and brilliant goalkeeping

USA 1 Iceland 0

Scoring

USA Hamm (Wagner)

While technically the U.S. squad played well, they seemed unable to mix up their game style when confronted by the expected bunker defense. In such wet slippery field conditions it would seem that the patient buildup should have been interspersed with more direct shots from outside the box, and long balls from the keeper. In the second half when Iceland made a few half-hearted attacks, their bunker was open. Yet the keeper wasted the opportunity by slowing the game down by rolling out the ball to one of her defense, playing right in to the Iceland defensive style.
