Heinrichs gave a start to Wagner in a 3-4-3 formation and she magnificent. In the 8th minute Wagner lifted a ball over the defense to MacMillan, whose shot skidded wide of goal. In the 38th minute and 43rd minute MacMillan had a couple of chance but over hit both  England's only chance came early on a close range shot stopped well by Solo. as U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo, at full extension, had to scoop a close-range shot outside the right post. In the final minute of the first half but Wagner's header hit the crossbar. 

Captain Julie Foudy played the whole game in a defensive position allowing the attacking game to pivot off Wagner. She was able to control the pace of the attack particularly in the last half hour hour of the game when the rhythm of the U.S. team left the England team helpless. During that period Wagner’s through ball put MacMillan free to drive it under the keeper Hall from 15 yards.

With a quarter of an hour left a pass from Wagner cut through the defense springing substitute Wilson free on a breakaway. Her dribble past the keeper gave her the rare honor of scoring in her first international game.

What's exciting about England is that have invested a lot in their women and you can see the difference. You can tell these players have played together. They set the ball and hit long balls with purpose and off they go. They are running under the ball and making things happen and it's tough to defend against. I am very pleased with our 90 minutes in terms of our possession. We got around the right, we got around the left and we got our backs, midfielders and forwards behind their defense. We created chances and we turned England pretty much at will, but finishing is still a part of our game we need to improve. Iam thrilled about both Kelly Wilson and Heather O'Reilly. Kelly and Heather gave us fresh legs and really injected some spark into the attack. I think our team looks at them like these young kids who play their roles, but also as kids that can play with us. Our team is still in its infancy. We have a year and half to develop this core of players and that's a lot of time. But the thing I love about this group that that they recognize that nothing comes easy. This was a good game to build and I hope we play our best game of the tournament against Norway.

I was hoping to get into the game today, and if the opportunity came, I felt confident that I could contribute (she is one of the top forwards on the U.S. Under-19 National Team). Aly played me an awesome ball and all I had to do was beat the goalkeeper.

We're psyched to play Norway again.. "We always know that the game will push both teams to their highest levels. We just have to take care of our bodies tomorrow, get as much rest as possible and get ready to go to war for 90 minutes.

Other

Heinrichs rested forward Cindy Parlow for the match as she was nursing a mild back strain, but the 5-11 striker should be ready to go against Norway.
