June 6, 2004 USA tied up again by Japan USA 1 Japan 1 Sunday, June 6, 2004 Papa John's Cardinal Stadium Louisville, Kentucky With little or no movement off the ball the U.S. squad were bedazzled by a quick, skilled Japan team in the first half who led 1-0 at the interval. Many U.S. players receiving passes were not moving when the ball was struck and were easily beaten to it by the swift Japanese players. The second half saw a different performance by a motivated U.S. team that begun to impose some control over the match. A goal by Wambach evened the score but Japan had three scoring chance in the waning moments of the game. Brandy Chastain was named MVP although only entering the match at the half, but her work rate and presence raised the level of the play so obviously that she well deserved the award.
