Last minute goal by Tiffeny Milbrett beats Brazil in World Cup warm up game

USA 1 Brazil 0

Attendance 15,074

Both teams used this match to give their new and younger players a taste of the level of soccer that they will encounter at the 2003 world Cup in September. The first half was played at a slower pace than was usual for the reigning world champions, as they had their first look at some of the new young players that Brazil has brought to the upcoming Championship. As usual it was a physical game between two teams from the top of the women's game, and it was apparent that Brazil's veteran players need to help rid their young skilled players of those tendencies to react physically when to the ball, emotional weaknesses that have cost their National Team dearly in some past international matches.

Milbrett's excited arrival in the second half helped a team that was already stroking the ball well and had raised the tempo of their game. After missing an open goal opportunity that she had created with a final move to beat the keeper, who was lucky not to have given away a penalty kick as she dived and caught Milbrett's ankle, she finished the match with a fine left footed first time curling volley from outside the box. The keeper had no chance as she stood and watched it go by. The 98th. international goal for Milbrett and a win for the home team.

Another fine performance by Briana Scurry resulted in another shutout for her, and the Defensive Player of the Match Award.
