August 2, 2001 First set of 2001 W-2 Season awards announced Point Scoring Champion Missy Gregg Memphis Mercury 49 points
Goal Scoring Champion: Missy Gregg Memphis Mercury 22 goals
Missy Gregg of the Memphis Mercury built such a large lead in the race for the scoring title that a strong run from second-place Tina Murphy, Charlotte Lady Eagles, late in the season still came up eight points (four goals) short.
Gregg started off a bit slow, failing to score in her first outing, a 2-1 loss to Kansas City. She went on to score 11 in the next three games. In all, she recorded five three-goal games with her best night coming against the Mystics in the return bout. Gregg made Kansas City pay dearly for their previous victory, scoring five times in the 10-2 rout. Gregg tallied more points and goals in 12 games this season than any player in the 20-game Premier Development League. Her five assists were also good for fifth in W-2 on the season. The 22 goals and five assists account for half of the team's 54 goals this season.
Assist Leader
Margaret Saurin Memphis Mercury 10 assists
After winning the W-2 Championship with the Springfield Sirens last year, Margaret Saurin crossed the Atlantic to continue her lengthy career in Europe with a stint with Fortuna Hjorring in Denmark before returning to USL. The Irish international, who was second on the Sirens in points and goals last year, tallied 10 assists this season, edging teammate Dawn Crow by one.
GAA Champion
Stephanie Weisenfeld Chicago Cobras 0.54 GAA
Chicago Cobras goalkeeper Stephanie Weisenfeld prevented a clean sweep of the statistical awards by Memphis, edging second-place Meghan Burke of the Mercury for the Goals-Against Average Championship. Weisenfeld played every minute of Chicago's 11 games this season, making her the only W-2 goalkeeper to do so. She gave up just six goals in 998 minutes for a goals-against average of 0.54.
Burke finished second at 0.75 with seven goals allowed in 842 minutes this season.
