August 3, 2001 Ladyhawks’ Players Honored at W-2 Championship Banquet Among the winners at the 2001 W-2 awards Thursday evening at the W-2 Championship Banquet in Memphis, Tennessee were two Ladyhawks players, Jen Davin for Defender of the Year, and Katie Barnes for Rookie of the Year. The Ladyhawks opened a few eyes this season with some surprising performances against some of the league's top teams behind a defense that kept them in nearly every game. Leading the defense was Jen Davin, who saw action in 11 games for a total of 1,024 minutes. She also chipped in offensively with a goal and three assists on the season. One of the biggest stories of the year was The Ladyhawks's stunning 3-2 overtime win over the Chicago Cobras, ending the 2000 W-1 Champion side's 36-game winning streak that stretched back to 1998. Katie Barnes made quite an impression in the brief time she spent playing for The Ladyhawks this season to win the Rookie of the Year award. Barnes tallied seven goals and six assists in seven games (610 minutes) this season before departing the club for duty on the U-21 U.S. Women's National Team, which captured its third straight Nordic Cup title in Norway Tuesday with a 6-1, win over Sweden. Barnes, who was not on the pool's list earlier in the year, was unable to play in the final match due to injury, but started all three previous games, helping the U.S. defeat Iceland 3-0 in the opener with an assist on the second goal in the 31st minute before exiting in the 63rd minute. She went on to play the first half of a 4-0 win over Denmark and 63 minutes in a 1-1 tie against Germany.
