Piranhas Sign U.S. National Team Member Christie
Welsh
The Hampton Roads
Piranhas have signed U.S. National Team Member Christie Welsh to the 2001
roster. Welsh, a 5-10 striker from Massapequa Park, N.Y., has just returned
to the United States from Mexico, where she played with the U.S. National
U-21 squad.
Welsh, who is a sophomore at Penn State University, is already a 2 time
All American, and was named National Freshman of the Year in 1999. She
has broken 6 records at Penn State including 4 goals in one game, 27 goals
in one season, 67 points in one season, and 9 game winning goals. Welsh
was a major contributor to Penn State reaching the final four for the
first time ever in 99. She made her debut with the National Team in January
2000 at the Australian Cup, where she assisted on the tournament winning
goal. She currently has 21 caps for the U.S., and 12 international goals.
Welsh makes her debut with Hampton Roads this Saturday, May 19th, when
the Piranhas (1-0-0) take on the Jacksonville Jade(2-0-0) at the Virginia
Beach Sportsplex. Kick off time is 7pm, and gates open at 6pm. For more
