News from the W-League games over the weekend

Charlotte Lady Eagles 4 Tampa Bay Extreme 0, in front of 1055 fans at Memorial Stadium. Christy Timbers, who is the sister of former Milwaukee Rampage defender Josh Timbers and was signed by Charlotte two days prior to the game, scored a pair of first half goals, while Deanna Kreidel scored the game-winner just four minutes into the contest. Tiffany Tisdale added the fourth goal in the final minute.

Chicago Cobras extended their winning streak to 34 games, dating back to June of 1998, with back-to-back shutouts over Indiana and Cincinnati.

Two-time W-League champion Long Island Lady Riders opened their seventh season with a 3-2 victory over New York and the Texas Odyssey kept rolling with a commanding 8-0 victory over Houston.

In a match of a pair of W-2 expansion teams Kansas City Mystics won 2-1 against the Memphis Mercury.


In New York on Saturday, the Lady Riders and Magic met for the first time as members of the same league since 1997. Both team's showed strong offensive play in a thrilling 3-2 Long Island win.

Cristin Burtis took the Lady Riders to a two-goal advantage with a pair of unassisted goals in the first half. The 2000 W-2 Most Valuable Player brought the Magic back a goal in the 61st minute, but Michelle O'Brien put Long Island back in front 3-1 just a minute later. Late in the game, 17-year old substitute Jen DeLaHoz scored her first W-League goal to give the Magic a hope, but Lady Riders goalkeeper Kim Wyant and her defense held on for the victory.

W-League soccer in the Pacific Northwest kicks off this weekend as the Vancouver

Breakers play host to the Seattle Sounders Select Women on Saturday at Swangard Stadium. Both teams played a provisional schedule in 2000 and join W-1 as full-fledged members this season.

W-1 player of the week

Cristin Burtis scored twice in the first half to lead the Long Island Lady Riders to a 3-2 victory over New York Saturday in their season opener, earning this week's W-1 Player of the Week award.

W-2 player of the week

Christy Timbers scored twice in the first half to help lead the Charlotte Lady Eagles to a 4-0 victory over the W-1 Tampa Bay Extreme and earn this week's W-2 Player of the Week award.
