The only lapse in defense came in the 83rd minute when UConn's Finnish forward Salla Ranta dribbled through the center of the box and placed a 12-yard shot just inside the left post past a diving Allison Snooks who came in for Dion in the 70th minute.

Former UConn midfielder Jennifer Tietjen scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 74th minute.

University of Connecticut will play host to a compilation of W-League players, which includes goalkeeper Danielle Dion, Kim Yankowski and Staci Wilson.

Quote

Raleigh Coach Bill Paladino
"I was expecting a tough game, but I never expected to be down two-nil," Raleigh coach Bill Palladino said. "We were trying to focus to keep our defensive shape. When Charmaine Hooper is in a game, she causes you to do things you wouldn't normally do. Just her presence causes you to make mistakes. The fact that we were able to regain our composure and come back showed how much character and heart this team has."

Maryland Coach Carolyn Rice
"We added a midfielder to the attack in the second half and it changed the game," Maryland Coach Carolyn Rice said. "It gave us a little more speed in midfield so we could push forward with more numbers. "The heat and humidity was brutal. No matter how fit you are, it is incredibly draining, both physically and mentally, as the game goes on. Atlanta fought to the end, but in fairness, they just ran out of legs."

Then Chicago forward Lindsay Hoelter slipped a rebound off a Hooper shot between Rudge and the right post to give Chicago a 3-1 lead. Fifteen minutes later, Hooper knocked Atlanta out for good with a right-footed blast from the top of the penalty box for Chicago's fourth and final goal of the night.

Quotes

"Our players showed a lot of guts tonight," Chicago coach Greg Muhr said. "They picked it up a level when things weren't going the way we wanted them to. The difficult thing for us was preparing for this game and not looking past it to Sunday."

Game

Playing only the first half, U.S. Women's National Team forward Cindy Parlow scored two goals to give the Wings their second consecutive semi-final win over the Pride. Raleigh defeated Maryland 5-0 in last year's semi-final game in Boston.

Parlow chested a Kim Yankowski cross from the right wing and half-volleyed a shot past Pride goalkeeper Peg Sullivan in the 33rd minute. Wing midfielder Samantha Baggett scored off a pass from Thori Bryan in the 41st minute, just two minutes after entering the game for an injured Silvana Burtini. The preliminary medical report stated Burtini tore the ACL and MCL in her right knee. Parlow put the Wings up 3-0 with 24 seconds remaining in the first half.

Midfielder Kristy Whelchel added Raleigh's fourth goal by flicking a header past Sullivan in the 49th minute.

The Pride continued to pressure and scored when Ricker dribbled around a diving Tracy Ducar and rolled the ball into an empty net.

Quotes

Wings Coach Palladino said he expected a tough match from Maryland and the Pride delivered. "It was exciting for us to finally get back on the field, but it took a while for us to finally find our rhythm Ð then fatigue set in. They were outstanding," he said. "They came after us and it was back and forth for a while. We were lucky early on not to give away a couple of goals early on. ÒWe were a little rusty in the box,Ó Palladino said. "We lacked focus when it came to finishing. I thought we should have done more with the chances we created."

"You can't get behind two goals to a team like Raleigh and expect to just climb back in it," said Pride Coach Carolyn Rice. "The girls we had in played their best, but we gave away too many soft goals. This was a deserving victory for Raleigh."

North Texas Heat win W-2 1999 Championship

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Sunday, August 8, 1999
After scoring just once in the first 150 minutes of their first championship experience, the North Texas Heat scored four times in the second half against the host Springfield Sirens to claim a 5-1 victory and the 1999 W-2 Championship, disappointing a crowd of 3,282 at Fred Berte Stadium in Springfield.

The Heat, which is owned by the North Texas State Soccer Association, capped off an incredible inaugural season in which they lost just once in 11 games after falling in a shootout in their opener.

“We’ve been finishing well all season - we’ve scored a lot of goals,” said North Texas Coach Bryan Crabb, whose team led the league with 46 goals scored, but was shutout in Friday’s shootout victory over New York. “I think we were kind of unfortunate on Friday, but we worked on finishing yesterday and today.”
