February 13, 2002 University of Washington signs two top student athletes
Defender Sara Davis and goalkeeper Brittni Goodwin signed letters of intent to attend the University of Washington.
Sara DavisDavis is a defender from San Clemente High School, California. Her Mira Costa High School team advanced to the CIF Division II semifinals in 1999 and 2000. She transferred to San Clemente and was named Most Valuable Player after leading the team to the 2002 South Coast League title. Her most recent club experience was with the San Diego Surf program that was a national championship finalist in 2001. She was a Surf teammate of current Washington freshman Kelley Schweighart.
Brittni Goodwin
From Plantation, Fla., Goodwin is a goalkeeper from two-time defending state champion American Heritage High School. She surrendered only 17 goals during a high school career in which she recorded 65 shutouts. She posted a remarkable 0.19 goals against average her junior season, leading the team to a 30-1 record.
Goodwin will have the unique opportunity to train at Washington with a pair of U.S. National Team goalkeepers in assistant coach Amy Griffin and junior Hope Solo. A member of the 1991 World Cup champions, Griffin (then Allmann) collected 24 caps for her international appearances with the U.S. Nationals between 1987-91. Solo, the 2001 Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year, earned seven caps for recent appearances with the national squad.
"Working with Amy is a big draw and then there is the chance to train with Hope Solo who is a walking advertisement for being a goalkeeper here at Washington," Head Coach Gallimore explained. "Brittni has really good hands, great feet and good athletic ability. The thing she is in need of most is the opportunity to play at a higher level and a solid dose of goalkeeper coaching. She's got a lot of potential and will improve very quickly training with Amy and Hope."
The recruiting class is supplemented by the return from injury of two standout players. Andrea Morelli, a three-time all-conference selection and the 1998 Pac-10 Defender of the Year, returns for her senior season after being sidelined the entire 2001 campaign. Morelli red-shirted after tearing the ACL in her left knee. The Huskies also return forward Kim Taylor, a talented member of last year's recruiting class who injured her knee prior to last season and red-shirted.
