Notre Dame wins NCAA Championship on penalty kicks

Notre Dame 1 UCLA 1 (4-3 penalty kicks after 110 minutes of play)

Scoring

UCLA Own goal by Gunnersdottir, 60th minute

Notre Dame Thorlakson (penalty kick) 74th minute

In an exciting and evenly matched game it was the luck of the bounce when it came to the penalty kick shoot out. UCLA had looked the more attractive team in the regular play. They were more imaginative and skilful in their attacking game, but were outmatched physically. Notre Dame looked much like a one player team with the dominant Canadian player Canadian their main strength and support.

Both defenses played well, and the UCLA Freshman keeper was outstanding.

It is still a puzzle to us as to why there appears to be no female referees in North Carolina, and in women's NCAA championship televised games. Why is the final officiated by men?
