#24 Wisconsin Women finishes their regular season with a 1-0 victory over the Billikens of Saint Louis

#24Wisconsin finished the regular season with a 1-0 victory over the Billikens of Saint Louis, bringing the Badgers' record to an impressive 15-5. The 2000 campaign marks the first time UW has recorded 15 wins since the 1996 squad finished 15-5-4 with a second round NCAA Tournament appearance.

One of the six athletes honored in today's senior day festivities, Allison Wagner (Hudson, Ohio) netted the game-winner for Wisconsin 16 minutes into play on a long pass from Michelle Hawkins (Plano, Texas). Despite 11 Badger shots and a penalty kick attempt by Megan Dobesh (Cedarburg, Wis.), the UW could not put another ball into the back of the net to increase the Wisconsin season 37 goal tally.

Late in the second half, it looked as if Saint Louis would even the score when Carrie Carlson sent a solo shot into the far corner of the UW goal. The play was pulled back on an offside call, the only one of the game.

This afternoon's game was one of the few in which neither team dominated the offensive side of the center line. Saint Louis keeper Meghann Burke tallied seven saves, including the stop on Dobesh's PK, to Badger sophomore Kelly Conway's (Littleton, Colo.) six. Wisconsin only notched four less fouls than the Billikens and still took one less corner kick than the opposition.

Scoring summary
16:25 UW Allison Wagner (Michelle Hawkins)

Goalkeeping
UW Kelly Conway, 90 min., 6 saves, 0 goals, 7 shots
SLU Meghann Burke, 90 min., 7 saves, 1 goal, 11 shots

Wisconsin Head Coach Dean Duerst

"Both team's played effectively, but I don't think we played the sharpest attacking game we've played this year. Occasionally that happens, but we are still an experienced and disciplined team. I'm excited for this group and how much they have improved over the last year. We have 15 wins, and you have to credit that to the staff, the team, the administration, really everyone involved. It really shows the character of this team. "

Washington State picks up its third Pac-10 win of the season in a 2-1 battle at Oregon

Attendance: 311 Weather: 60 çF overcast

Washington State picks up its third Pac-10 win of the season tonight in a 2-1 battle at Oregon. The Cougs are now 11-6-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the Pac-10 and looking to even out their record Sunday at Oregon State.

The first half ended scoreless, due much in part to WSU goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) who came up with two big saves on what head coach Dan Tobias described as to strong chances to score for the Ducks. Oregon held most of the run of play in the first half, outshooting the Cougs eight to three, but WSU came back 57 seconds in to the second half to take the lead, which they never relinquished.

Junior Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) knocked in a corner kick which freshman Rachel Rodrick (University Place, Wash.) finished unchallenged. The duo came up big again 13 minutes later to increase the Cougars lead to two off another corner kick by Childs which Rodrick headed in.

Childs two assists break the schoolÍs career record with 17, two ahead of the previous record she shared with senior Deka DeWitt (Auburn, Wash.).
DeWitt had a game-high seven shots, which vaulted her to first place in the school's all-time record books for career shots (281).

The Cougs remained strong for the next 30 minutes of play, outshooting the Ducks 15-9 in the second half, but broke down defensively with 10 minutes left giving up an Oregon goal to bring the score to 2-1. ñThat goal gave them a lot of momentum, but we did a good job of holding on. It was a good Pac-10 victory on the road,î Tobias said. ñThey are a good team.

The Cougars take on Oregon State on Sunday in Corvallis, Ore. at 2 p.m. PT in their final road game of the regular season.

Brittany Kirk scores with 1:15 remaining in second overtime to give # 5 California Golden Bears a 2-1 Pac-10 Conference victory over the host #12 USC Trojans

Brittany Kirk scored at 118:45 in the second overtime period Friday as the No. 5 California Golden Bears recorded a 2-1 Pac-10 Conference victory over the host No. 12 USC Trojans in a wild affair. Cal improves to 15-1-1 overall and continue its hold on second place in the Pac-10 with a 5-1 record. USC falls to 11-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Pac-10 play.

The Trojans were down a player through the entire overtime when senior midfielder Katie Ticehurst picked up her second yellow card of the match in
the 81st minute. With the red card, Ticehurst will sit out Sunday's game against No. 9 Stanford, which will also be Senior Day for the Trojans.
The fireworks started at 79:17 when Laura Schott recorded her 21st goal ofthe season for the Golden Bears when she knocked a header in off a 30-yard free kick from Nat Stuhlmueller. The Trojans answered quickly on a goal by freshman Jessica Edwards (Mesa, AZ/Dobson HS). Edwards now leads the Trojans with nine goals on the season and has three goals in her last two games.

USC Head Coach Jim Millinder

"The kids really fought hard, but you can't play down a player for that long against a top team like Cal. We had a lack of control today and the ball just didn't bounce our way. I know this will be a letdown emotionally for the team, but we have to regroup for Stanford."

USC had 29 fouls on the match, including four yellow cards (Ticehurst with two yellow cards and automatic ejection).

The Trojans will play their final regular season home match on Sunday (Oct. 29) against No. 9 Stanford at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at 1 p.m

Head Coach Duerst

'We looked at this game as if it were Purdue in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, and we are looking at St. Louis as if it were the semifinal. We are treating each game like we are playing for a championship, not like we are trying to be a contender. We are trying to make small goals every day to keep things in perspective. Our goal today was a shutout. Marquette beat this team only 2-1. They are looking for a bid (into the NCAA Tournament) and so are we. We needed to score some goals on this team."

Nine players came off the bench this evening to help the Badger squad to their sixth shutout of the season. Lindsay Chavez (Shorewood, Wis.) made her first appearance as for the UW while Toni Koram (Ann Arbor, Mich.) saw action in her first home match. "These girls really showed that they are class kids that are really ready to play. It was good to see the continued pressure and the consistent style that we play with come from the freshmen. With all of their hard work, we want to give them more time,* said Duerst of his up-and-coming Badgers, *but they did very well with the time that they had."

The Badgers take on the 13-3-3 Billikens of St. Louis on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the UW's final regular season home match. "We are expecting a very good game from St. Louis," said Duerst. "They are a very good team and actually very similar to Colorado College. They are coming in fresh. They haven*t played since last weekend. They have a lot to gain from the game with us. But we want 15 wins. That's a huge goal for us."

University of Washington sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo named as Pacific-10 Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week after posting shutouts over two highly ranked opponents last weekend.

Solo helped the first-place Huskies (15-1, 6-0) to the first ever sweep of their Pac-10 rivals from Los Angeles. She had six saves against 12th-ranked USC on Friday in a 1-0 UW win. In Sunday's 1-0 overtime victory, she helped turn back No. 7 UCLA's potent offense that outshot the Huskies 25-3. Solo denied five Bruin shots, including back-to-back saves of point-blank attempts with five minutes left in regulation play.

The All-America candidate has surrendered only one goal in her last 407 minutes of play, including a current streak of 215 scoreless minutes. In six Pac-10 games, she has three shutouts and has allowed only two goals.

A product of Richland (Wash.) High School, Solo played two international games this summer with the U.S. National Team. She was one of four goalkeepers in the training pool for the Olympic team. This is the first time Solo has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week and the fourth time this season a Husky has received the award.

Solo's efforts this season have helped Washington earn its highest ranking ever, a No. 4 listing in the American Soccer Writers poll, after beginning the season unranked. The Huskies can clinch their first ever Pac-10 championship by winning two of their final three games. They play at Oregon State on Friday and at Oregon on Saturday

and Barbara Almaraz) will play their final regular season match at USC.

Senior Isabelle Harvey

Midfielder/forward Isabelle Harvey (Cap-Rouge, Quebec, Canada) is receiving accolades as one of the top collegiate players this season as a senior. Harvey was named as a first team preseason All-American by College Soccer News and has been named as a finalist for the Hermann Award, given to the top player in the nation. The three-time All-American currently holds school career marks for goals (45), assists (37), points (127) and game-winning goals (20). On Oct. 22, her assist to Jessica Edwards in a 2-1 win at Washington gave her 37 career assists, surpassing Kim Clark (1996-99). Harvey opened the 2000 season on Aug. 27 with an assist on the Trojans' first goal in a 2-0 win at UC Irvine off a corner kick. She recorded a two-goal game against No. 21 Michigan on Sept. 3 in Tempe, Ariz. Harvey is second on the team with 15 points (5-5=15). Last season, Harvey led the team with 30 points (11-8=30). On Oct. 17, 1999, Harvey recorded two assists against Washington State, becoming the first player in USC history to record 100 points in a career. Harvey also played for Canada in the 1999 Women's World Cup.

She broke the school record for career assists, held by Kim Clark (1996-99) with 36 assists. Harvey registered her 37th career assist on Oct. 22 at Washington State

Freshman Jessica Edwards

Freshman Jessica Edwards (Mesa, AZ/Dobson HS) has made an immediate impact on the team and is adding scoring punch for the Women of
Troy this season. She is first on the team with 20 points (8-4=20). On Oct. 22, she recorded a two-goal game at Washington State, including the
game-winner at 115:09 in a 2-1 overtime victory. Edwards scored the lone goal in a 1-1 tie on Oct. 8 vs. No. 5 UCLA, which earned her a spot on the Soccer America Team of the Week (Oct. 2-8). She recorded her fourth goal of the season on Sept. 30 at Utah (4-1 win) as time expired at the end of the second half. On Sept. 8, Edwards scored two goals and added an assist in USC's 3-1 win over Baylor. She scored a goal and led the team with a game-high eight shots on Aug. 27 in a 2-0 win at UC Irvine. She leads the team with 77 shots (sophomore Ali Fennell is second with 33 shots).
Edwards also is close to breaking into USC's single-season top 10 lists. She needs only one goal to tie Courtney Barham (1995 and 1998) and Maggie Merritt (1994) for eighth place and three points to tie Megan Orach (1997) for 10th place.

She is on pace to challenge Maggie Merritt's record for most shots in a season. Edwards has 77 shots through 16 games and is on pace to record 96 shots this season (Merritt registered 92 shots in the 1994 season). Her 77 shots puts her in a tie for second place with Clark (1997) and Isabelle Harvey (1996) for most shots in a season. Edwards' shot total also places her ninth on USC's career list.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Arase

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Arase (La Canada/La Canada HS) is 7-1-2 this season for the Trojans and has allowed seven goals this season for a 0.66 goals-against-average. She suffered her first loss as a Trojan on Oct. 20 at No. 3 Washington (1-0) and is now 14-1-2 as a starter at USC. Arase recorded 11 saves in a 1-1 tie against No. 5 UCLA on Oct. 8 at the Coliseum. She recorded her fourth shutout of the season (sixth career) on Sept. 22, making three saves in a 1-0 decison at home against Loyola Marymount and on Sept. 10 vs. Vanderbilt, she added her fifth solo shutout, making four saves in a 3-0 victory. She started and won both matches at the Sun Devil Classic, including her fourth solo shutout on Sept. 1 in a 1-0 decision against Colorado. She opened the season with her third solo career shutout on Aug. 27 in a 2-0 win against UC Irvine. She registered a career night on Sept. 28 when she made 21 saves in a 1-1 tie at No. 23 BYU. BYU recorded 38 shots in 120 minutes against Arase, who missed tying the school record of 23 saves by a goalkeeper in a match (held by Cathy Zoccoli in 1993 vs. Stanford).

USC manage a 2-1 win in second overtime against Washington State

Freshman Jessica Edwards scored her second of two goals Sunday at 115:09 as the No. 10 USC Trojans pulled out the 2-1 second overtime victory over the host Washington State Cougars in a Pac-10 Conference match. It started on a breakaway by senior Isabelle Harvey who fed a wide-open Edwards.

With the assist, Harvey became USC's all-time leader in assists with her 37th career assist, surpassing Kim Clark. Harvey is USC's career leader in goals (45), assists (37) and points (127).

USC improves to 11-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in Pac-10 play while Washington State fell to 10-6 overall and 2-4 in Pac-10 play. The Trojans snapped a brief two-game losing streak and finish their grueling three-game road trip with a 1-2 record. USC suffered a 2-1 loss at No. 12 Santa Clara on Wednesday and 1-0 loss at No. 3 Washington on Friday.

Washington State goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen had several important saves for the Cougars. With one minute remaining, Jorgensen stopped Edwards in front of the goal after Edwards and Harvey went on a two-on-one break for the Trojans. She also made a shot at point-blank range against Harvey in the 112nd minute after Harvey broke away on a one-on-one run down the right side.

It was a physical match, especially in the first half when WSU's Deka DeWitt and Katrina Stroh left the game with injuries. However, both players would return for the Cougars. Freshman defender Nikki Goza, in her first collegiate start, also had a strong game for USC as she performed well in her assignment of marking DeWitt.

"Our kids did a great job today," said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. "This was a huge win for us, considering we were playing our third game in five days. Washington State is a good team and they have played all the top teams in the conference very tough. I think fatigue was a factor for Washington State in overtime. Our technical superiority really took over. They were worn down and we did a good job in overtime of finding feet and the open player."-----------

Tami Bennett's Overtime Goal gives # 6 Washington 1-0 win over # 7 UCLA

Washington 1 UCLA 0
Husky Soccer Field, Seattle, Washington
Attendance - 3,403.

Tami Bennett made her final regular-season game at Husky Soccer Field a memorable one. The Washington senior scored in the fourth minute of overtime Sunday, lifting the sixth-ranked Husky women's soccer team to a 1 0 triumph over No. 7 UCLA before a school-record crowd of 3,403.

Bennett is Washington's all-time scoring leader with 32 career goals. Sunday's was arguably the biggest goal of her collegiate career.

"This is the best one," exclaimed Bennett. "Doing this against an opponent like UCLA makes it special. Also, this puts us in the running for the Pac-10 championship."

The win extended the school-record winning streak to nine games and gave Washington (15-1, 6-0) a one-game lead in the Pacific-10 Conference standings. The Huskies are the only undefeated team in the conference and have defeated all four teams still alive in the title chase. Washington can clinch its first ever Pac-10 women's soccer title by winning two of its final three games.

"The result ranks up there as one of my best as a coach," said seventh-year UW coach Lesle Gallimore. "I was going to be happy with a tie because that still kept us in the driver's seat for the Pac-10 championship, but to get the victory is just a thrill."

Bennett's goal came on her first and the team's third shot of the game. UCLA (12-2-1, 3-1-1) suffered its first conference loss despite controlling the run of play and posting a 25-3 advantage in shots.

Freshman Jaime Carstensen dribbled the ball down the right side and pushed a pass to Bennett in the middle. Bennett controlled the ball and drilled a low 20-yard shot past the diving Bruin goalkeeper CiCi Peterson and inside the left post at 93:25. Bennett increased her UW single-season record to 14 goals and tied Tara Bilanski's (1992-95) career points record of 74.

Scoring--1, Washington, Tami Bennett (Jaime Carstensen), 93:25.

Shots - UCLA 25, Washington 3.
Saves -- UCLA 0 (CiCi Peterson), Washington 5 (Hope Solo).
Corner Kicks -- UCLA 9, Washington 3.
Fouls -- UCLA 14, Washington 11.

Bennett is no stranger to records. She amassed a state prep record 152 goals at Seattle Christian High School, a record that was broken last spring by the 166 career goals of her sister Melissa Bennett who is now a freshman on the UW team.

As she has done all season, sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo played a huge role in the outcome with her fifth shutout. She was credited with five saves, including back-to-back denials of point-blank Bruin attempts with five minutes remaining in regulation. Solo tipped a 15-yard Tracey Milburn shot off the crossbar and then smothered a shot by Venus James who fielded the carom.

"Hope and our defenders gave us a chance to win it late. I've said all year that good defense wins games and today we were a living example of that," Gallimore said. "This was not our best game of the year, but as far as heart and determination I'm very proud and pleased with the team."

The victory was Washington's eighth this season over a nationally ranked opponent. The only UW loss came against top-ranked Notre Dame. The Huskies' last six victories have all been by one-goal margins.

The Huskies are on the road for the final three regular-season games, beginning Friday at Oregon State.

Clemson outshot the Wolpack 16-5 but could not capitalize on their many scoring opportunities. Clemson's best chance to score came in the 118th minute, when sophomore forward Deliah Arrington took a shot towards the far corner of the Wolfpack net, only to have it slide by the far post.

Pierce Nets Only Goal in #6 Husky Women's Soccer Win over #12 USC

(#6) Washington 1, (#12) USC 0
Husky Soccer Field, Seattle, Washington
Attendance 920
Sophomore defender Vanessa Pierce scored the lone goal early in the second half Friday and helped shut out 12th-ranked USC, leading the No. 6 Husky women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory before 920 spectators at Husky Soccer Field.

"We love shutouts, it's what defenders live for," exclaimed Pierce. "To also get the winning goal, I guess you could say that was an ideal gamefor me."

The goal was an eight-yard header at 56:12 off a Caroline Putz corner kick from the left side. Pierce charged onto the arching cross from the top of
the box and got a head to the ball in the midst of several USC defenders, UW teammates and goalkeeper Lauren Arase. Teammate Tami Bennett, who was closest to the post, was knocked down before she was able to strike the ball.

It was the third goal of the season for the Woodinville High School product, but her first game-winning tally.

"The corner kick went closer to the near post than I expected, but I knew I had to get it," said Pierce. "I did everything to get my head on it and landed on Tami. That was a big goal for me and the team."

Scoring--1, Washington, Vanessa Pierce (Caroline Putz), 56:12.

Shots - USC 15, Washington 15.
Saves -- USC 3 (Lauren Arase), Washington 6 (Hope Solo).
Corner Kicks -- USC 4, Washington 5.
Fouls -- USC 11, Washington 10.

Washington (14-1, 5-0) won its school record 14th game of the season eclipsing the previous record of 13 established in 1994. The Huskies remained alone atop the Pacific-10 Conference standings and extended their school-record winning streak to eight games. The Trojans (10-3-2, 2-1-1) dropped from second place with their first conference setback.

Washington Head Coach Leslie Gallimore

"You can't say enough about our team's defending. Good defense wins games. How our defenders keep doing it is beyond me, but they are going to have to come up and do it again Sunday against a very fast attacking team in UCLA. I think our team sees the light at the end of the tunnel. We know we're in for a tough game Sunday, but we're at home and UCLA has to come across the mountains and play us after battling WSU."

The first-place Huskies play their final regular-season home game against second-place UCLA on Sunday at noon. The seventh-ranked Bruins (12-1-1, 3-0-1) won 1-0 at Washington State on Friday. A victory Sunday would give Washington a 1 1/2-game lead in the conference standings with three games left to play. The Huskies have never won a Pac-10 championship.

The victory was Washington's seventh this season over a nationally ranked opponent. The only UW loss came against top-ranked Notre Dame.

Despite being outshot 9-5 in the first half, Washington had the more dangerous scoring opportunities. The closest was an 18-yard flick by Putz that traveled past Arase, but bounced off the left post with 1:11 remaining until halftime. Putz was able to take consolation in getting an assist on the winning goal, her eighth of the season that tied her with teammate Theresa Wagner for the Husky record.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Solo collected six saves, all of them in the first half. None were particularly challenging as she was well positioned to every Trojan shot on goal. Arase recorded three saves for the Trojans.

Post game quote
Head Coach Dan Mathias

"I think the lapse in the first minute of the game was a good lesson for everybody because that turned out to be the game-winner. We say all the time that with our conference the margin for error is next to nothing and the lapse in the first minute ended up being the game-winner and the difference in thegame. I thought the positive thing was that we made some adjustments at the half. I thought we had four clear-cut quality chances in the second half that we didn't finish and that happens, but I think the point is that we created good clear-cut, quality chances and that was our goal before we started the game."

The Cougars took 13 shots, including one by freshman Rachel Rodrick (UniversityPlace, Wash.) that ricocheted of the inside of the top post. Junior Beth Childs (Snoqualmie, Wash.) had three shots on goal, one a corner kick that Bruins keeper CiCi Peterson made a tough save on. Lindsey Jorgensen (North Bend, Wash.) came up with nine saves in goal. The Cougars held the Bruins to 19 shots, nearly three under their average. WSU is one of only three teams this season to give up one or less goals to UCLA.

UCLA's unbeaten streak goes to 12 with record breaking 8-0 trouncing of Oregon

#7 UCLA set two single-game school records Sunday, defeating Oregon 8-0 in a Pac-10 match-up at UCLA's Drake Stadium. The Bruins' eight goals were UCLA's most ever against a Division-1 opponent, surpassing the previous total of seven set against UNC-Charlotte on Sept. 10, 1999. In addition, UCLA's 35 shots in the game were also a school record against a Division-1 opponent, one more than the Bruins' 34 shots taken against Oregon State on Oct. 19, 1997.

UCLA (11-1-1; 2-0-1 Pac-10) got things started in the 19th minute when junior Bethany Bogart bent in a corner kick to put the Bruins ahead 1-0. Just a few minutes later freshman Whitney Jones' pass to senior Tracey Milburn resulted in the first of her two goals in the game.

Less than a minute later, Rigamat received a Venus James cross for her first goal of the day from six yards. At the 89th minute Milburn assisted on a Breana Boling goal to make it 8-0. advantage.

UCLA outshot the Ducks 35-12. The Bruins have not lost a game since a 1-0 loss to Clemson in the season opener back on August 25th.

The Trojans changed the momentum of the game with three goals late after Oregon State tied the game at 2-2 with two goals in the first six minutes of the second half.

Warner and Fennell added their second goals at 88:25 and 89:15 respectively.

Post game quote

USC Head Coach Jim Millinder
"I told them at halftime that we didn't have that killer instinct. When you play good teams, they won't let you off the hook. That was probably the worst eight minutes that we have played in two years here. Andrea Warner played a great game for us. She really had a strong second half."

Other
It was the first time that sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Arase has allowed two goals this season. She improved to 7-0-2 on the season and is now 14-0-2 in her career. This was the second time that USC has allowed two goals in a game; the Trojans lost, 2-1, on Sept. 15 at Florida.

The Trojans will have a three-game road trip, beginning on Wednesday (Oct. 18) with a non-conference match at Santa Clara, and Pac-10 matches at Washington on Friday (Oct. 20) and Washington State on Sunday (Oct. 22).

"We made one mistake in the back that allowed Toledo to tie the game in the second half. We missed three great opportunities to clear the ball down at our end, and their leading scorer, Corrie Hasenjager just tapped the ball past Katie. The second goal that she made though, could not have been stopped. It was a great shot. Toledo's game plan was good. They actually rested Corrie and didn't play her at all in the first half. She came out in the second half and did some damage. We could have won 6-2, but we had some bad moments. This teaches us how to be scrappy and stick it out."

Wisconsin shuts out Michigan State with help from Badger keeper Kelly Conway

After suffering two shutout losses in the last two weeks, both in the final ten seconds of play, Badger keeper Kelly Conway (Littleton, Colo.) came through with flying colors for the UW this afternoon at Michigan State, earning her fifth shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over the Spartans. Michigan State, fourth in the Big Ten standings this week, falls to 9-3-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference while the Badgers hit double digits in the wins column as they up their totals to 10-5-0 and 6-3-0 in the Big Ten.

SCORING SUMMARY
31:19 UW Lauren Schmidt (unassisted)

GOALKEEPING
UW Kelly Conway, 90 min., 12 shots, 7 saves, 0 goals

MSU Sara Kloosterman, 90 min., 4 shots, 2 saves, 1 goal

Conway knocked away seven of the Spartan's 12 shots, increasing her sixth place total on the career saves charts to 150, 40 above the seventh place finisher. Today's game put her in the three-slot on the career saves per game column as she averages 4.16. Head coach Dean Duerst had numerous praises for his star keeper, "Kelly made three very big saves in the last 15 minutes today. You need your keeper to come up with those saves and she has been doing her job very well. Even against Purdue and Penn State, she did her job in stopping those shots. It was the rebounding that hurt us."

While Conway held the backfield for the UW, another sophomore made an impact across the center line for the Badgers. Lauren Schmidt (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored her third goal of the season, fourth of her career with her game-winner this afternoon 31 minutes into the match.

Wisconsin leads the UW-MSU series 14-1-1. Today's win avenged an overtime shutout of the same score by Michigan State last year on Badger turf. The Badgers travel to Toledo (4-7-1, 3-4-1 MAC) on Sunday to take on the Rockets at noon. The UW has only faced Toledo once, but walked away the victor in a 6-1 romping of the Rockets in 1998.

USC 3 Oregon 0 as Trojans winning streak reaches six

Freshman Jessica Edwards (Mesa, AZ/Dobson HS), senior Isabelle Harvey (Cap-Rouge, Quebec, Canada) and junior Brittany Save lkoul(Seal Beach/Los Alamitos HS) scored second-half goals Friday as the No. 10 USC Trojans defeated the Oregon Ducks, 3-0, at McAlister Field. With the win, the Trojans improve to 9-1-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in Pac-10 play while the Ducks fall to 4-10 overall, 1-2 in Pac-10 play. Junior goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes (San Jose/Presentation HS) needed only two saves to record her first shutout of the season and sixth in her career. Oregon goalkeeper Sarah Peters made eight saves for the Ducks.
The play in the first half was even before Edwards opened the scoring at 62:41, thanks to an assist from sophomore Kim Abbamonto (Mission Viejo/Capistrano Valley HS). Edwards chipped a shot over Peters' head for her team-leading sixth goal of the season and her third in as many games. Harvey's goal came at 70:23 on a breakaway while Savelkoul scored at close range at 76:21.

Post game quote

USC Head Coach Jim Millinder

"We didn't play with a lot of desire in the first half, but the kids stepped it up in the second half. We did a better job of executing and finishing our chances. We thought we may have a letdown after last week's game against UCLA; we told our players that there is no easy game in the Pac-10 Conference. Brittany really needed that goal because she has been working hard lately. Isabelle had a great run on her goal and Jessica was able to finish after being snake-bitten in the first half."

USC is now 5-0 all-time against Oregon.
The Trojans will host Oregon State on Sunday (Oct. 15) at 1 p.m. The game also has been moved to McAlister Field.

The Trojans took the lead at 21:21 when Edwards took her own rebound off UCLA goalkeeper CiCi Petersonand scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
UCLA answered in the second half at 68:11 when Lindsay Greco scored from 10 yards out on a fast break by the Bruins and a good pass from Staci Duncan. Post game quotes

USC Head Coach Jim Millinder

"I thought we did a good job today of getting people in early and finishing our chances. The goal for us really lifted our spirits. Lauren did a terrific job and she has kept us in a lot of matches this year. I doubt you will see this type of intensity the rest of the season for both teams because this rivalry brings out the best in everyone. This was an exciting match for the fans. You could tell that both teams were just exhausted after regulation."

The tie snapped UCLA's nine-game win streak, but the Bruins still have a current 10-game unbeaten streak.
This was the first tie in the 10-game series between the two teams. UCLA holds a 7-2-1 all-time record against USC, but the Trojans are 2-0-1 now against the Bruins at the Coliseum.

USC will host Oregon on Friday (Oct. 13) at McAlister Field at 3 p.m. and Oregon State on Sunday (Oct. 15) at the Coliseum at 1 p.m. in Pac-10 matches.

Wisconsin loses 1-0 to Purdue In final second of match

If Wisconsin could deduct ten seconds from each of their games they would have a nearly perfect Big Ten record. For the second Sunday in a row, the UW was shutout in the final ten seconds of regulation play. Last weekend, the Badgers fell to the No. 6 Penn State Nittany Lions with nine seconds remaining. This afternoon's game was even more devastating as they gave up their third Big Ten loss of the season, 1-0 with one second on the clock to the Boilermakers of Purdue.

Sophomore Kelly Conway (Littleton, Colo.) stood between the posts for the Badgers today, notching five saves on 18 Boiler shots. Conway knocked down a breakaway shot by Purdue's Jeannie Moppert but couldn*t get repositioned before Moppert sent her own rebound past the Badger defense and into the net at the 89:59 mark.

Post game quote

Head Coach Duerst

"Kelly played very well today. She was much busier than Purdue*s keeper. It was really a game that either team could have won and, just like last weekend, the game should have gone into overtime. Unfortunately, sometimes soccer has a luck element to it. It was Purdue*s luck today; we just didn*t catch a break. Just like the Penn State game, this is really teaching us a tough lesson. We need to have what it takes to dig down in the last minutes of our games. But, maybe this will help us become more determined. We didn't come out to play today and we didn't have the emotion we needed. But, every Big Ten game you play is going to be like this. We have a confident group and we can't let this hurt us.*

Purdue is now 9-4-0, 4-3 in the Big Ten this season and was ranked fourth in the conference earlier this week.

The Badgers, now 9-5-0 overall, 5-3 in the Big Ten are on the road again this coming weekend as they travel to Michigan State (9-2-2, 4-2-1 Big Ten) on Friday night and to Toledo (4-7-1, 3-4-1 MAC) on Sunday.

Wisconsin beats Indiana 2-1 in overtime

For the second time this season, the Badger Women*s Soccer team got off to a delayed start on the road due to a late arrival by the officials. The UW seemed frazzled by the delay, falling behind in the first half, 1-0, but made a stellar come-back in the second period, knotting the scoreboard at one and sending the game into overtime, the first OT game for Wisconsin this season.
The Hoosiers scored their goal on the first shot of the game just seven minutes into action and played aggressively against an NSCAA receiving votes Wisconsin squad, getting off 11 shots and six corner kicks. Indiana hit a season-high 25 fouls to the Badgers* 17 tonight as the game ended with four yellow cards in the books.
In the second half, the UW tied the game as freshman Madison-native Jenny Kundert knocked in a goal with ten minutes remaining in regulation off a pass from Natalie Roedler (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Allison Wagner (Hudson, Ohio). The goal was the West High star*s fourth of the season and Roedler*s seventh assist. Wagner*s assist puts her in a tie for second place with Erica Handelman (1990-93) in the UW record books for career points with 82.
Sophomore Camile Flenniken (Northglenn, Colo) netted the game-winner for the UW five minutes into the second overtime period on a direct kick. Head coach Dean Duerst commented on the goal, *Michelle (Hawkins) put Wags semi-through and past the keeper. There was a yellow card and we had the direct kick. Natalie ran over the ball and Camile took the shot. She said she just focused on the corner, but Lauren (Schmidt) was screaming before the ball even hit the back of the net.

Post game quote

Coach Duerst
"Our team played so well in the last 30 minutes of the game. This was a huge win, especially playing away. This group really showed that they were tough, especially coming from behind. It really showed character."

The Badgers now lead the series with the Hoosiers, 5-4-1. Before tonight, the UW had not beaten IU since 1996 when Wisconsin blanked Indiana 3-0 in Bloomington. Tonight's game begins a two-game overtime streak when these two squads match up after last season*s 0-0 OT draw on UW turf. Wisconsin improves to 9-4 overall, 5-2 in the Big Ten while Indiana falls to 6-4-1, 1-4-1 in the Big Ten.

The UW takes on Purdue on Sunday at 1 p.m. in West Lafayette. The Boilermakers are 8-4-0, 3-3-0 after losing their fourth game of the season to the Gophers of Minnesota 2-0 tonight at home. UCLA overwhelms Marquette 5-1

No. 5 UCLA won its ninth consecutive game Friday night, defeating No. 19 Marquette, 5-1 at UCLA's Spaulding Field. The Bruins, who improved to 9-1 on the season, haven't lost a game since a season-opening 1-0 loss to then-No. 6 Clemson back on Aug. 25.

UCLA junior Breana Boling startedthe rout by scoring on a 25-yard blast at the 16th minute. Just 25 seconds later, Bruin freshman Sara-Gayle Swanson put UCLA ahead 2-0, taking a Stephanie Rigamat pass and beating Marquette goalkeeper Mo Bothwell. The Bruins went to 3-0 lead at the 28:08 mark when Bruin senior Tracey
Milburn dribbled down the field, bending in a shot over Bothwell into the top left corner of the net. UCLA junior Brittany Whalen scored the most impressive goal of the evening, looping a ball 35 yards into the top of the net at the 34:14 mark.

Marquette answered with its first and only goal of the evening just 28 seconds later, when Kate Gordon blasted a shot from 30 yards out, beating UCLA keeper CiCi Peterson. It marked the first goal Peterson has given up since Sept. 1 , ending UCLA's six-game shutout streak.

Following a 4-1 halftime lead, Bruin junior Staci Duncan scored the games only second-half goal, after receiving a through ball from Rigamat to beat Marquette substitute goalkeeper Ashleigh Koenig. Rigamat was UCLA's top performer on the evening, tallying all three of
UCLA's assists.

With the victory, UCLA improves to 9-1 on the season while Marquette, which dropped only its second contest of the season Friday, falls to 12-2.

Wisconsin loses to No. 6 Penn State in Final Ten Seconds

The announcer had just begun the ten-second countdown as the 496 fans in attendance for the Wisconsin/Penn State women*s soccer game at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex prepared for an overtime match. But the Nittany Lions had a different agenda. Sophomore All-America player Christie Welsh was in perfect position to receive the flank from senior Jeannine Verdrager and net the winning goal past Badger keeper Kelly Conway (Littleton, Colo.) with nine seconds remaining in regulation play.

Conway played an outstanding game for the UW, knocking away eight of the Lions* 19 shots, including five in the second half.

Despite what the scoreboard read when the clock ran out, the Badger defense played a very aggressive game as well. Senior Michelle Hawkins (Plano, Texas) earned a defensive save, her second on the year while the rest of the UW backfield cleared the ball numerous times back downfield into scoring territory.

Following the game, Duerst shook his head almost in awe, repeating, "Nine seconds," but remained grounded and positive.
"It was a great game, a great battle. The girls are just very disappointed. They fought so hard. A loss like this is hard to swallow. But it gives us inspiration and motivation to take one game at a time for the rest of conference play. Penn State is a great team, and we need to use this game as determination for the rest of the season.
Kelly played excellent under pressure today she was very composed throughout the game. Penn State just got a little gift today."

Wynter Pero (Chicago Heights, Ill.) returned to the field tonight for the Badgers in her first game since weekend one of the 2000 campaign. After struggling through injuries, her squad was entusiastic about her return.

Post game quotes
Head coach Dean Duerst
"I feel excited for our team, for their confidence down the road. When an opponent comes on strong and scores, to come back and score late in the game for the win, is great for a team*s confidence. We have really grown as a team over the past year. With both wing mids scoring on passes from the forwards, these girls have established their roles so that we can continue to play to our team*s strengths. We focused on ironing out and refining our game this week, and I think it showed tonight. We really spread out the field."

Wegleitner

"It was exciting, especially to score that early in the game. It was a great ball. I just tried to get forward early. All week, we worked on exploiting the wing space and getting forward early. We tried to get our forwards up front as quickly as possible to get some numbers in the penalty box, and it worked."

The Badgers improve to 8-3-0 overall, 4-1 in the Big Ten while the Buckeyes fall to 4-6-0 overall, 0-4 in the conference. Wisconsin returns to action on Sunday as it plays host to No. 6 Penn State at 1 p.m. The Nittany Lions are coming off a 2-0 victory over Minnesota this evening.

USC survives hurricane Gordon with 2-1 win over Central Florida

Sophomore Ali Fennell (Santa Ana/Mater Dei HS) and freshman Megan Abbamonto (Mission Viejo/Capistrano Valley HS) scored in a seven-minute span Sunday as the No. 10 USC Trojans rallied for a 2-1 win over the Central Florida Golden Knights. Conditions for the game were dismal as the effects of Hurricane Gordon could be felt at Percy Beard Stadium. A driving rain mixed with winds of up to 30 miles per hour made it difficult on a rain-soaked field.

UCF (2-7) opened the scoring at 10:18 when Claire Kohake put in a rebound off USC (6-1) junior goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes. With a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Golden Knights switched from their gold jerseys to their road black uniforms in order to stay dry, but the Trojans quickly changed the game in the opening minutes.Fennell put her goal in at 49:27 off a save made by UCF goalkeeper Maria Banuls. Banuls had made a save off a shot from Jackie Fodor, who received a cross from junior Christy Callier. The Women of Troy scored a similar goal at 56:34 when Abbamonto received a cross from freshman Jessica Edwards, who beat Banuls to a ball on the right side. Fodor got credit for another assist, her second of the game.

USC outshot UCF by a 22-5 margin, including a 13-2 edge in the second half.

Post game quote
USC Head Coach Jim Millinder

"It was a good result for our team. The conditions were a great equalizer for Central Florida, but our kids really came out to play in the second half. We just wanted to get a result and get out of here based on the weather."

Wagner recognized the fatigue in her team's play, "We got frustrated very early on. I think everyone was worked up, and that hurt us more than helped us. We played slower and more tired than we should have, and we weren*t running the ball as much as we usually do."

The Hawkeyes, who were coming off a 5-1 loss to Minnesota on Friday, arrived in Madison with a vengeance. Ranked third in the Big Ten, Iowa needed a win to maintain their confidence for the 2000 season. Hawkeye head coach Wendy Logan was still concerned about her squad*s performance in the first half of today's match, "Wisconsin was creating great opportunities in the first half. We spent most of the period on our heels defensively."

Wisconsin head coach Dean Duerst remains positive for the outcome of his team this year, "The difference between the Illinois game and the Iowa game was that we scored quality goals against Iowa, but we couldn*t buy a goal today. It was very frustrating. Today we feel we took a step backwards, but it's over and now we just need to move forward again."

Badger keeper Kelly Conway (Littleton, Colo.) moved to seventh on the career saves chart with her four today, but was still disappointed in the overall performance of her team, "We weren't quite unified today -- the whole team, not just defensively. We didn't have the urgency we needed to have to win. When we were down 1-0 at the half, we needed to get a shot in the net and it just didn*t happen."

Post game quote
USC Head Coach Jim Millinder

"I thought (Florida) was more competitive than we were tonight. They are an outstanding soccer team and unfortunately, we caught their wrath tonight. Florida is a top six or seven team. It was a great battle, but in the end they deserved to win. I don't think we played as well as we could have, but those two goals were spectacularŠthere was not anything that (goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes) could have done about it."

Clemson upsets North Carolina 2-1

Nancy Augustyniak helped Clemson to a 2-1 upset win over North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer match at Clemson, SC Wednesday (September 13) night.

With the win, Clemson improves its record to 7-0 on the year 2-0 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 6-1 this season, 1-1 in the ACC.
Clemson is ranked fourth in the NSCAA poll and North Carolina is ranked first. The Tar Heels are the defending NCAA Champions.

North Carolina had won 37 consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference matches dating back to a 3-2 loss to Duke on October 19, 1994, the first season Clemson fielded a women's soccer team. Clemson and Duke are the only teams in history to defeat North Carolina in ACC play.

North Carolina scored first as Jena Kluegel sent the ball in on a corner kick. Maggie Tomecka flicked the ball to Anne Remy who scored from six yards out with 33:31 gone in the match. Nancy Augustyniak scored on a penalty kick at the 61:12 mark. Deliah Arrington was brought down in the box by North Carolina goal keeper, Kristin DePlanchett. Nancy Augustyniak scored the winning goal at the 74:31 mark. Augustyniak sent the ball to Arrington. Arrington sent a 25 yard shot
on the ground to the lower right corner of the net.

Post game quote
Head Coach Ray Leone

"The key to this victory was guts, our team showed a commitment for 90 minutes. I am so proud of them. This win is for my wife Tracey who started this program in 1994. It killed her that she could not be here. She is in Sydney for the Olympics. She called the team before the game and wished them luck. I am especially happy for this senior class. (On the winning goal.) It was a quick shot and it surprised their keeper. It seemed liked it
rolled for ever."

FSU (4-3) opened their ACC campaign Sunday and dropped their first home match of the season to the Clemson Tigers (6-0) 3-2. FSU made two come from-behind bids before allowing freshman Lindsay Brown to score the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the match.
The Seminoles once again proved they can fight back after falling behind Sunday. Clemson opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the game but sophomore Cindy Schofield notched her second goal in two games to even the match 1-1. The Seminoles went into half-time trailing the Tigers 2-1 after sophomore Heather Beem gave Clemson the lead in the 38th minute. FSU came out of the half and took only 3:37 to even the game at 2-2. Senior Rachael Watkin knocked in her second goal of the weekend and pulled the Seminoles back into the game. The score remained tied until the 88th minute of the game. Clemson sophomore Deliah Arrington fired a shot that rebounded to Brown who buried the eventual game-winner. The Seminoles had one last chance to send the match to overtime when freshman Amber Tollefson just missed putting away a header at the left post. As the shot sailed just wide, the whistle blew before Clemson had to put the ball back into play.

Post game quote
Head Coach Patrick Baker
"This was a great game today. This is why you want to coach in the ACC and if you're a player, you want to play in the ACC for games like this. We've started to overcome some of the barriers that this program faces but you just have to give credit to Clemson today. They scored and we came back. They scored and we came back again. We just didn't have enough in the tank at the end. They got one with two minutes left. Although we are showing that this team is never out of it, I wish we could play with the lead more often like we did against Texas A&M Friday. We are still learning how to win. We have five freshmen starting for us and it's a young team. They are still learning as far as understanding what it's going to take to win at the Division I level on a consistent basis. I think they learned a little bit today about what it takes to win a game in the ACC."

Post game quote
USC Head Coach Jim Millinder.
"Late in the match, we wore Vanderbilt down and took care of the ball. I thought we had a lot of quality chances, but we just didn't finish them. We are getting better, however, at creating chances. We just need to work on being sharper, especially in the penalty box. Vanderbilt battled today and when all is said and done, they should be a tournament team."

The Women of Troy will travel to Gainesville, Fla., next week to face the University of Florida on Friday (Sept. 15) at 8 p.m. (Eastern) and Central Florida on Sunday (Sept. 17) at noon.

Wisconsin shutouts Oakland University 2-0 at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex in the second game of the Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Invitational

It appears that when Wisconsin scores in agame they win. The Badgers have lost only two games and both were shutouts. When the UW has scored in a game, the squad leaves victorious. Such was the case as Wisconsin shutout Oakland University at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex in the second game of the Rocky Rococo Wisconsin Invitational on Saturday, September 9th.

The first goal came halfway into the first period when Flenniken served to junior Natalie Roedler (Mendota Heights, Minn.) who redirected the ball to Kelly Kundert (Madison, Wisc.) for the goal. Flenniken sent a corner kick to Lauren Schmidt (Milwaukee, Wisc.) for the second goal of the afternoon with under four minutes to play in the game.

Post game quotes

Head Coach Dean Duerst

"All of our players were out there giving it their all. Today, the fatigue made us look not quite as sharp as yesterday or last weekend. And, often times, when we get tired, we start to see more individuals playing than a team. But, our team this year and today has been able to fight through that frustration to be successful. And that's what we'd like to keep striving for."

Camile Flenniken

"We all just go out there and do the job we've been training to do for the past nine months. The team is really clicking this year compared to last year. We have great team chemistry."

I was a little disappointed that we conceded a goal when we were up 2-0, but this was a great outing for the team. I believe our best soccer is in front of us."

Junior Shaelyn Fernandes (San Jose/Presentation HS) made four saves in her first start in goal for the Trojans.

We took a lot better care of the ball in the second half than we did in the first and that allowed us to create chances. We still need to finish our chances, but in this heat, it was a great result."

Huskies put on a show in Italy

Mario Rimati

Head Coach Len Tsantiris and his University of Connecticut soccer team rolled into the north-eastern town of Udine (home of men's 1st division pro club Udinese) for a series of games against Italian women's clubs from Aug. 22-28. The event was organised by former Italian national team interpreter/pr Mario Rimati (USA'99) together with the logistical help of several coaches and club presidents in the Udine area.

Thanks also to Coach Tsantiris' desire to want to come to Italy after several games held in his native Greece. UConn, famous for also having had in its ranks USA'99 World Cup champion Sara Whalen, played 5 back-to-back games against 1st and 2nd division clubs. The Americans won all of their games (6-0, 3-0, 6-0, 3-0) except for the last one (2-2). One of the 3-0 victories was over 1st division club Bardolino (5th out of 16 teams in this year's women's Serie A championship). The
fact of having been on the road since Aug. 11th eventually took some toll on the team, but nevertheless the players still managed to put on a great and entertaining show.

Tsantiris, at his 20th season as head coach, brought a team which consisted of 23 players, including the following national team players: Canadian Mary-Beth Bowie, Finnish Salla Ranta and American Mary Frances Monroe who was certainly one of the most spectacular players of the event (Monroe was part of the U.S. B national team which defeated the
Italian National Team 4-1 in July in NY). Monroe hit the Italians' goal 4 times during the event. Forward Alexa Borisjuk was also devastating up front as she scored 6 out of the 20 goals for UConn. UConn's goalkeeping was solid thanks to starting goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis. Reserve goalkeepers Shanna Caldwell and Erin Rice also saw action. One
of the team's leading players was acting captain Lauren Molinaro at midfield. So impressive was her style of play that after the final match she was saluted by a small group of female fans who wanted to say goodbye to her.

The entire UConn entourage consisted of 47 people, including relatives and friends, assistant coaches Sarah Barnes and Lisa Cole as well as Academic Counselor John Miceli. As part of the event the group managed to take in a day-trip to Venice (including a gondola ride for the players), which is about 85 miles from Udine, as well as the seaside city of Trieste (where James Joyce once lived), the small yet picturesque town of Udine as well as the mountainside resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo, home of the 1956 Winter Olympics (both Venice and Cortina have appeared in the old James Bond movies with Roger Moore). On the day of their arrival the team also took in an important Udinese match at Udine's "Stadio Friuli" (sight of several Italia'90 World Cup matches). About 30,000 fans packed the small stadium to cheer on the boys in a topsy-turvy match which saw Udinese qualify for the 4th time in a row for the prestigious UEFA championship. The UConn players and relatives appeared so enthralled by the entire spectacle that they even took part in cheering on the Udinese players with Italian chants (UConn was also briefly shown on Italian national television). Typical Italian-style dinners offered by the Italian clubs also followed all the matches. A good time was certainly had by all, both Americans and Italians.

For those that know anything about Italian soccer, many people in Italy (especially the men) practically eat, breath and live the game before they even become embryos in their mother's wombs. So constantly taken up by the men's game is the average Italian fan that very few are easily impressed by women's soccer. All that certainly changed with UConn's superb performance during the entire event: 99.99% of the people that came to watch the games was extremely impressed with the Americans'
style of refreshing touch-and-go play as well as athletic prowess (probably the one important factor which is severely lacking in the average Italian player). One man in particular was also overheard saying the following: "I could stay here all day to watch them play". A reaction like that is certainly hard to come by in the so-called "world capital of men's soccer". Converting that die-hard Italian male soccer fan to the women's game is certainly no easy feat.

And how did the Italian players feel about being trounced by Tsantiris' "Panzer Division"? The were simply overjoyed because through their play the Americans showed everyone, players and fans alike, that women are also capable of playing the "juego bonito". The Americans also displayed their keen determination to keep playing and winning by avoiding the usual "acting" which is so typical of European soccer (ie, rolling on the ground after a foul in a sign of pain and anguish which can often last for days). Some spectators also observed just how quiet the Americans were as they were occasionally fouled by the Italians
(luckily, no American players were ever injured. This was not only due to their top physical conditioning but also to the careful attention by their medical staff before and after the games).

All-in-all, the event was a tremendous success. As a result of the event, many Italian club coaches have already begun to modify their practises based on what they saw of the Americans. One Italian club president in particular who's been running his female team since 1973 (the 4th oldest in Italy) said it was the most exciting event he had ever seen, even more exciting than when the Italian National Team rolled into town for a friendly match last year against his club prior to USA'99. And speaking of the Italian national team, newly appointed head coach Carolina Morace will certainly have some very big shoes to fill as her national team will be playing a friendly match in the Udine area towards the end of September. The match, against a still-to-be-defined opponent, will mark the very first international match of the former national team captain as head coach. With the memory of UConn's wonderful performance still etched in the minds of many Italians, Carolina will certainly have one very difficult task ahead of her in the weeks to come! The Italians have gotten a taste of the "juego bonito" and they definitely would like more!

Wisconsin loses 2-0 to Marquette

The Badger women's soccer team lost game four of the Verizon Wireless Milwaukee Cup to Marquette, 2-0 this afternoon at UW-Milwaukee's Englemann Field. Wisconsin still leads the UW/Marquette series at 3-2-1 and completes their season-opening tournament with a 1-1 record.

Rookie Madison native Jenny Kundert (Madison, Wisc.) earned the tournament's Offensive MVP Award after scoring the first goal in the Wisconsin/UW-Milwaukee victory and taking ten shots in the two-day event. Senior Allison Wagner (Hudson, Ohio) and sophomore Lauren Schmidt (Milwaukee, Wisc.) were also honored for their performances, receiving All-Tournament Team lauds.

The Golden Eagles' offense came out on top despite their shot total being tripled by the Badgers. Marquette took one corner kick all afternoon and used that opportunity to net a goal at the 4:54 mark. The score remained 1-0 until under eight minutes left in the game when the Golden Eagles came down field on a breakaway to seal the shutout.

Post game quote
Badgers Head Coach Duerst

"I'm not disappointed in our team at all. We played unbelievably. They just scored in the first five minutes. We outshot them 23-7, and sometimes the shot ratio shows which team dominated the game. In this case, they earned the win by scoring early. It just wasn't our day to score out there. I'm very proud of our girls in that they created a lot of opportunities. Marquette is a very well organized squad. The difference in today's game was the extra composure that Marquette had to come up with the win."

UW heads to California this weekend to face No. 7 preseason-ranked Stanford. Action begins Friday, Sept. 1 at 9:30 p.m. Central.
