British University Games first day results
By Colin Aldis

1st day of the games: Tuesday 11, April 2000

England 6 Wales 0
Scotland v Northern Ireland ( - ) score to follow

For the 3rd year in a row, womens football has been added to the sports at BUGs. This year at Birmingham University, the representative team of English Universities again comfortably beat their Welsh counterparts on a cold and wet morning. This keeps the record of always winning against the Welsh, in a series dating back to April 1993, believed to be the oldest fixture for national student teams, played just a few months before the only womens soccer tournament at the World Student Games, held in Hamilton, Canada.

Ironically, the team that won in Canada, CHINA are close to being the world's best, and some of USA players who lost 2-1 in the final are now world champions.

England can boast one full England International in Sue Smith, and a present squad member in head coach, Sian Williams (who recently became Wales National Team Manager). Also, there are two former England Internationals, Maz Catterall and Jodie Handley, plus Welsh Internationals, Jayne Ludlow and Gillian Davies, and potential Israel International, Ayala Liran. England U-18's Kyproulla Loiziou and Amy Mason, who had a difficult 3 matches in Spain last week, are also in the squad.

Almost all the squad are drawn from English FA Premier League (top 34 clubs), which has been a major development over the last couple of years. The team has also followed (or were we first?) the British pattern of appointing a female manager, and this role was given to former EU and Crewe & Alsager player, Jackie Payne (who works for Norfolk County FA as their womens football development officer).

The next match will be Wednesday 12th April 2000 at 11am England v Northern Ireland. Scotland (the current BUGÕs champions) will play Wales.

The final matches will be played on Thursday 13th April 2000.
