Scotland defeats Austria in first match of World Cup qualifying games

Austria 1 Scotland 2

Scotland's women got their World Cup campaign off to the best possible start, defeating Austria 2-1 away on Saturday.

Despite a one goal deficit at half time, the Scots fought back and Donna James equalised in 52 minutes when she beat the offside trap, rounded the keeper and slotted home. Donna was also instrumental in the winner, in 74 minutes, gliding past three defenders before squaring to Mhairi Gilmour who had a simple task to score.

Scotland coach Vera Pauw said afterwards: "It was a poor game, but the players kept on battling with great determination. We only had two chances in the match and scored with both of them, while our defence was excellent."

Scotland's next match is at home to Wales, at Livingston on Sunday, 28 October (3.00 pm).
