England news plus status of 2001 UEFA Finals

In other news the English FA have decided NOT to host the 2001 UEFA Finals (for senior teams). This leaves the way open for Germany to host the tournament, as it is believed they are the only other country to have bid to be the host.

At the time of posting 7 nations have qualified for the finals (Germany, Russia, France, Norway as group winners, plus Denmark, Sweden, and Italy).

England take on Ukraine on Tuesday next (28th) to decide the other place, and England are in a good position, after a 2-1 win away in Kiev.

Italy's qualication today makes them the 7th of the eight who also competed in the 1997 Finals, with Spain being replaced by England or Ukraine. Ironically, it was Spain who denied England a place in the last finals, after Spain managed to a win at home and draw in England.
