UEFA Under-18 competition 2000-20001 final groups and known play-off dates

Colin Aldis

UEFA U-18 2000-2001 first rounds will be completed by Sept 14th, 2000. One change from last season, the Finals tournament will be 8 teams instead of 4, bringing it into line with the seniors final tournament, both to be held in summer 2001.

It is possible again, that U-18 finals by UEFA will clash with Nordic Cup U-21 tournament 2001, which will
be held in Norway next year. This happens due to the summer only league seasons in Northern Europe, which are
relatively short, ie. in Norway, Finland, Sweden and Iceland.

England to play Finland on Thursday 28, September 2000

England will play Finland on Thursday 28, September 2000 in a friendly, to be held somewhere in London. Both teams will use the match as preparation for the UEFA play-offs due to be played in October and November. England have to play for Ukraine for the first time, while Finland face a difficult 2 leg tie with Sweden.

Celt Cup to be held in Northern Ireland

T he Celt Cup will be held from September 22-23, 2000 in Northern Ireland. the tournament is jointly hosted by the Republic of Ireland and Scotland. Possible contestants may includeFaroe Islandsbut Wales has not been included.

Morace rumors follow Italy's loss to the USA
Mario Rimati

After Italy's less-than brilliant performance against the States' B national team in New York on July 7th, rumours have begun circulating about the possible candidature of Carolina Morace as Italy's new head coach. The former legend of Italian female soccer has denied the rumours but the apparent crisis surrounding the national team has had people talking about Morace as the next successor to the present head coach, Ettore Recagni.

The former national team captain has admitted that she has not yet been contacted officially by the Italian F.A. regarding the appointment. The rumour appears to have originated in the world of female soccer, most likely from some of the national team players who have in the last 4 years seen 4 different head coaches. Many are rather disillusioned, to say the least, with the continual changes. The decision surrounding a probable successor to Recagni falls squarely on the shoulders of the higher echelons of the F.A.

The present situation vis-a-vis the national team bench can't really get any worse than it already is. Perhaps Morace's entrance on the national stage will help salvage whatever is left of the national team just in time for the European qualifying round. Italy should play Portugal in September. The whole sector should also benefit with her presence as Morace has become quite the public figure in the world of Italian soccer, both male and female (she was a play-by-play commentator at the recent European championships, not to mention during the entire period of France'98).

The one big advantage that she would bring to female soccer, together with her expertise of the game, would be the much needed press coverage that this sport is desperately hungry for at the moment in Italy.

UEFA approves request for staging of first UEFA Women's Club Championship

UEFA Club Championship

In a major step for women's soccer in Europe and after years of attempts, the Executive Committee of UEFA approved the formation of a UEFA Women's Club Competition at it's recent meeting in Paris. Like the long time men's competition it would result in a club being crowned as Champion of Europe.

It will be set up as mini-tournaments until the quarter-finals. Associations must be conducting championships on a regular basis for their teams to participate.

UEFA also added the proviso that it's approval is contingent to "certain financial promises to UEFA" being made by the participating teams.

National Teams

Because of concern that the new WUSA league will entice many European players, an international fixture list will be established to safeguard the dates of matches for national teams in order to cope with the increasing number of games.

At the start of the 2003/05 competition an association will be appointed to organize the Final Tournament to ensure that they have time to prepare the event including finding local sponsors and exploiting the commercial rights.

In future, starting with the 2003/05 competition, an association will be entrusted with the organization of the Final Tournament to ensure that this host association has sufficient time to prepare the event, to find local sponsors and to exploit the commercial rights. In the past, the host association was not appointed until the participating teams in the Final Round were known. However, even though seeded in the Final Tournament, that team should take part in the qualifying rounds.

Relating to introduction of FIFA Women's Under-19 World Championship

Following the introduction of the Women's Under-19 World Championship, the UEFA Committee for Women's Football asked for permission to double the number of teams to eight in the Final Round of the European Women's Under-18 Championship. The response from the Executive Committee was positive, but a final decision will not be taken until the meeting in Rotterdam next month.

A way to halt the continued downslide of Italy's National Team program?
By Mario Rimati

It's probably about time that the Italian F.A. and its female division hand over the bench of the national team to Carolina Morace. The national team has suffered in the last 4 years with too many abrupt changes that have impeded it from working in a tranquil environment. In order to bring home some positive results (4 different head coaches in 4 years). Italy cannot possibly expect to beat Germany, or anyone else for that matter, without 7 important players (how would the U.S. fair against China or Norway in a competitive match without the likes of Hamm, Akers, Overbeck, Foudy, Fawcett, Lilly or Scurry?). Morace is perhaps the only person in Italy with the passion and the inside know-how of the game. She's also the only woman who presently has a 2nd level professional coaching license (the coaches of the men's 1st division have 1st level licenses). With Morace on the bench many of the "lost sheep" like Panico, Tesse and others would come back to the manger. A winning coaching team could be the following:

Head Coach: Carolina Morace

Assistant Coach: Betty Bavagnoli (77 caps with the national team and her assistant during their brief spell coaching the men's pro club Viterbese)

Team Managers: Betty Vignotto (107 goals in 109 games with the national team and Morace's "mentor" on the national team years ago) and Teresa Cartolari (involved with female soccer since 1969. Former team manager under Guenza and former team manager of Lazio).

The four women are probably the foremost experts on the game, so much so that someone like Cartolari for example used to actually suggest players to some of the former head coaches. And they listened too.

What's the F.A. therefore waiting for? The loss of more key players? More humiliation in the eyes of international female soccer? One thing is almost certain: if Morace were to take over the national team it might be difficult to see the likes of Panico or Tesse take off for the pro league in the States next year. One of the reasons for the "mutiny" of many players is the desire to have their former national teammate as head coach. After all, as Panico said awhile ago about Morace's coaching abilities (once Morace quit playing she coached her briefly at Lazio) "She's the best coach I've ever had". And this is coming from Italy's most prolific player at the moment. It's doubtful after all the years of waiting and being bounced around from one coach to another that many players will want to miss out on being coached by Italy's most famous player (captain of the national team for 10 years. Vice European Cup champion in 1993 and 1997. Winner of 4 Italian Cup titles, 12 national championship titles and leading goalscorer for a record 13 times). Many are anxiously waiting for their "messiah" to take over the reigns of the national team.

Schedule for 9TH UEFA Championship 1999-2000, GROUP 1-4

It is rumoured that England is to follow Brazil's lead from two years ago and allow women referees to run a men's game, albeit a 5th Division match as opposed to Brazil's 1st Division opening game of their season officiated by women

The Italian press came out today with a very tiny article on a first in England: on September 13th in England's 5th division men's game between Kidderminister and Nuneaton, the refereeing will be an all-female trio lead by Wendy Tom (a lineswoman in several Premier League matches), Janie Frampton and Amy Rayner. It appears to be a first-time event in England men's soccer according to Italian sources.
