England manage a 2-2 draw in Portugal
By Colin Aldis
After the defeat by Norway in March, England flew to
Portugal to try and gain more points in the 2001 UEFA qualifying rounds.
England beat them at home 2-0 in February, to keep 2nd place in the
group, but Portugal then surprised Switzerland by beating them 2-0 in
Geneva.
On a sunny afternoon, close to the famous Lisbon bridge
over the River Tagus, at Sacavem, England were shocked by a breakaway
goal in the 9th minute, with a lob forward being met by Anabela Silva.
She touched it to CARLA COUTO, who had also moved clear of the England
defence, and she tapped the ball home from close range.
England then played some composed football on a difficult,
small and bumpy pitch, and Sue Smith created a chance for Danielle Murphy,
but she scooped the ball over the bar. Just before half- time, captain
Gillian Coultard sent a free kick into the penalty area, and KAREN BURKE
equalised with a low left foot shot, after some neat control.
In the 2nd half, Sue Smith again laid on a chance,
with a cross from the left, but Karen Walker touched the ball wide.
Then Portugal created a good chance with a through ball by Patricia
Siqueira finding Anabela Silva, but Pauline Cope did well to move out
and smother the danger. But this warning was not heeded by the England
defence, and just 3 minutes later, * * lobbed the ball over the England
keeper, to give the home team the lead again.
Just when it looked as though there was a shock defeat
for the visitors, SUE SMITH popped up at the far post, to volley home
a corner on the right by Karen Burke, to make a final score of 2-2.
Assuming Norway keep winning their matches, a draw
for England in their home match with Switzerland on May 13th, (again
to be shown live on Sky Sports TV) will be enough to give them 2nd place
in the group.
The top team in the group, advance directly to the
2001 UEFA Finals, while the 2nd placed team go into a 2 leg, home and
away play-off against the 3rd placed team in group 3. These matches
will be played in September and October 2000.
Hopefully, the 3 UEFA teams who have qualified for
the 2000 Olympics, will win their group, otherwise their preparations
will be affected by the first play-off match, unless UEFA are flexible
with the dates.

Game report on Italy crumbling 3-0 to an all-powerful
Germany and a commentary on the pitiful handling of women's soccer in
Italy
By Mario Rimati
By now, most know about Italy's disastrous 3-0 loss
to 1997 European champions Germany in Frankfurt on April 6th. Not taking
anything away from players such as Prinz, Grings and Smisek (Germany's
scorers), not to mention the fine performance of fellow teammates Weigmann
and Fitschen, one cannot help but wonder what the outcome of the match
would have been like had Italy fielded star forwards Patrizia Panico
and Rita Guarino and other heavyweights such as D'Astolfo, Frollani,
Tesse, Gazzoli and Tagliacarne (a rival to the leading goalscorer's
race in the Serie A). All were oddly left out of this all-important
Euro 2001 qualifying match.
Ulivi was virtually left alone on the forward line
having some pretty big shoes to fill in the absence of Panico and Guarino.
Her efforts proved futile in front of Germany's solid defense line.
Italy's only shot throughout the game came at the hands of Placchi in
the 2nd half which was easily stopped by German keeper Rottenberg. The
situation is now rather complicated for Italy. Its two remaining games
in Group 3 are against Iceland (which just recently had a high-caliber
workout against the States) and the Ukraine. Italy must try to hold
on to its 2nd place position in order to reach the finals through a
double play-off in autumn.
Up coming Games
- May 11th Ukraine-Germany
- June 7th Italy-Iceland
- June 17th Ukraine-Italy
- August 17th Iceland-Germany
- August 22nd Iceland-Ukraine
The 1st place team will advance to the Euro finals.
The 2nd and 3rd will square off for the play-offs against the 2nd and
3rd place teams of the other three groups. Commentary
In order to understand Italy's loss let's go back a
day or two to some of the comments which appeared in Italy's dailies
surrounding this match. The "defection" of many players was attributed
to reasons tied to work and university commitments. In Guarino's case,
a nagging knee problem kept her out of the squad. But was work and studies
the main reasons why players of the caliber of Panico and Tesse were
left out of such an important match? In the words of head coach Ettore
Recagni, " I think some of the players aren't being serious enough about
this. I can very well understand that taking 5 days off from work could
possibly even lead to being fired and if that were the case then the
player is more than justified in not coming. But for those players who
study there shouldn't really be a big problem with that. If you're organized
enough you're able to study on the road between one practice and another.
Besides, I don't think people take exams on a continual basis otherwise
the majority of the squad would already have degrees in their pockets
seeing the intensity with which some players manage to study". Not exactly
the most supportive words coming from a head coach.
A general "malaise" has been floating around the Italian
national camp for about 3 years now ever since the prestigious 2nd place
standing (behind Germany) at the 1997 European finals when bonuses from
the Italian F.A. were promised but never kept. Matters degenerated even
further upon the return of the National Team from USA'99 when the cost
of their sports' kits (sweat-suits, etc.) was detracted from the allowance
of their 2 week adventure in the U.S. Also, newly appointed captain
and veteran player Federica D'Astolfo (who took over from retiring Antonella
Carta) was indefinitely "banished" from the squad as she had dared to
write a letter of protest to the Italian Secretary for Equal Opportunity,
a letter in which she outlined the difficulties that many women encounter
playing soccer in Italy (including the episode of the World Cup kits).
Many of the players, especially the veterans, have
felt somewhat ignored by the Italian F.A. which basically demands "Blood,
Sweat and Tears" from them, that is, sacrifice and complete devotion
to the cause with very little in return (ie funding and more media attention).
Some players have even had to fend for themselves after serious injuries.
The survival of the national team and its recent game against Germany
can be to a certain degree miraculous in nature if one were to look
closely at the conditions surrounding the team itself. In a four year
period the national team has changed head coaches four times. Sergio
Guenza (coach of the 1997 Euro team), Sergio Vatta (who brought Italy
to the USA'99 qualification), Carlo Facchin (coach of the USA'99 expedition)
and now Ettore Recagni (who coached the national team 10 years ago).
Among these continual changes one also has to include
the loss of the national team's focal point, its charismatic captain,
the legendary Carolina Morace. Not exactly the most serene conditions
in which to be able to tie or even beat a traditional powerhouse like
Germany.

Spain U-18 1 - Norway U-18 1
On Monday evening April 3, 2000 in the rain, Spain
played Norway (likely favourites as they reached thefinal 4 tournament
last year), but this year it ended 1-1. The match had a red card, when
Lise Klaveness pushed over her Spanish opponent following a tackle.
One interesting fact for USA residents, is that the
Spanish keeper is American, but her grandfather or great grandfather
used to coach the local pro team of Sevilla. Father Jo Grech does not
talk about his playing career, but is proud of the fact that his daughter
has made the national team, seniors as well as U-18. Last Saturday she
helped the team win 2-0 in Holland, which could help Spain avoid the
tricky 2 leg home/away play off next September/October.
England U-18 2 Republic of Ireland U-18 2 In the second
match, England drew 2-2 with Republic of Ireland, with Amy Sudan being
shown the red card after giving away a penalty, we assume she tackled
a player in a goal scoring position. Considering England beat Ireland
5-0 last year, on a wet evening in Telford, this was an interesting
result and the matches on 5th and 7th April will decide who goes to
the Final tournament in August.
Two more mini-tournaments are scheduled for week beginning
April 17th April. The other one must be completed by May 17th.

Top
Guns left out of Germany-Italy showdown?
By Mario Rimati
The two "Top
Guns" of the Italian national team, star forwards Patrizia Panico
and Rita Guarino, not to mention long-time 2nd string goalkeeper reserve
Fabiana Comin and mid-fielder Manuela Tesse, have been strangely left
out of the all-important Euro 2001 qualifying match on April 6th in
Germany. Whether this is good news or not to the German squad remains
to be seen. It is definitely not encouraging news for the Italians.
There has been since the end of USA WWC'99, some confusion in the
air surrounding the national team. The exclusion of Manuela Tesse,
Federica D'Astolfo (the new captain after Antonella Carta's abdication),
defender Roberta Stefanelli (who had an outstanding World Cup) and
now Panico and Guarino seems to coincide with the arrival of head
coach Ettore Recagni. All is definitely not well among the ranks of
the Italian squad. As Panico recently said in a private conversation
with your correspondent "It wouldn't be an easy game against Germany
even if Rita and I were to playÓ. Not taking anything away from the
two forwards that will have very big shoes to fill this coming Thursday,
one feels like asking "Just how easy of a match is it going to for
Italy WITHOUT Panico and Guarino?"
Some new faces
to watch out for will be defender Maria Sorvillo who is not only a
permanent fixture for Lazio but also for Italy's U-18 national squad.

England continue their UEFA campaign, with loss to Norway.
By Colin A. Aldis
After the wins in Switzerland in October, and Portugal
last month, England had to play WWC99 4th placed team, Norway at Carrow
Road the home of Norwich City. With both teams on 6 points from 2 games,
this one would probably decide who will win group 2.
On a fairly warm evening, in East Anglia, in front
of one of largest crowds to see England play (plus a live TV audience)
on home soil, Norway took the lead after just 28 seconds. Some neat
play by Ingrid Saetre allowed Anita Rapp to cross the ball from the
left, and MARIANNE PETTERSEN outjumped Julie Fletcher, to head it into
the right corner, passed the desperate dive of keeper Pauline Cope.
After this early set-back, England fought back, mainly
thanks to the strength and skill of Kelly Smith, who has won many accolades
since moving to a USA University (Seton Hall). There were a couple of
shots, and a perfect cross for Karen Walker, and although the header
found the net, everyone was dumbfounded when the referee gave a foul
(for her hands on the shoulders) against the England striker. Then Kelly
Smith sent over a low cross from the right, and Bente Nordby dived down
to make the save.
In the 19th minute, England could have been ahead,
with another superb cross from the left by Kelly Smith, which was dropped
by Bente Nordby after a miniscule nudge by Maureen Marley, and then
a shot was blocked on the goal-line and Becky Easton tapped it into
the net, but again the goal was ruled out. England created another couple
of chances, but one went over the bar, and Bente Nordby saved the other.
Then Sue Smith curled over a cross from the left, and Brit Sandaune
headed the ball away. Norway replied with a speculative shot from 30
metres by Solveig Gulbrandsen, which was an easy save for Pauline Cope.
After all this England pressure, an un-necessary foul,
some 35 metres from goal, and BENTE KVITLAND (in only her 3rd appearance)
hit a spectacular free kick into the top right corner, to give Norway
a 2-0 lead. England still tried to get on the score-sheet, but a Kelly
Smith free kick went over the bar, and Danielle Murphy hit a shot wide
of the right post, followed by a Kelly Smith shot from 25 metres going
over the bar.
The Norwegian reply should have made it 3-0, as Ingrid
Saetre sent a low cross from the right into the goal area, and Solveig
Gulbrandsen skied the ball over the bar from just 7 metres. Then Becky
Easton made a run into the left side of the penalty area, and was pushed
by new captain, Goril Kringen and the ball went out of play, and so
for the 3rd time a referee decision had gone against the home team.
Just to add to the misery, a free kick on the right by Silje Jorgensen,
was lifted into the penalty area, but instead of Pauline Cope punching
the ball away, ANITA RAPP was there first, and she headed it into the
left corner to make it 3-0 at the break.
Early in the 2nd half, the England keeper managed to
punch away a cross from the right by Bente Kvitland. In the 56th minute,
Norway made a change, taking off Marianne Pettersen, to be replaced
by Unni Lehn. Then new mum, Margunn Haugenes came on to replace Hege
Riise. Towards the end, with Norway bringing on Dagny Mellgren to replace
Silje Jorgensen, and England also making two changes, it was Norway
who went closest to adding to the scoring. A great cross from the left
by Anita Rapp went to Dagny Mellgren, on the edge of the goal area,
and her half-volley side-footed shot hit the bar and bounced clear.
With the 3 points obviously going to the 'Vikings', one of Englands
greats came on (Marieanne Spacey) to replace Karen Walker. We were baffled
by such a decision, because there just a few seconds to go.
The next match against Portugal in Lisbon on Easter
Saturday, will likely decide if England can obtain 2nd place in the
group.
The top team in the group, advance directly to the
2001 UEFA Finals, while the 2nd placed team go into a 2 leg, home and
away play-off against the 3rd placed team in group 3, which is looking
to be Iceland or Ukraine.

Germany/France Under-16 National Teams' Camp

By Rainer Hennies
Each year the Under-16
National Teams of Germany and France train together at a camp that alternates
between the two countries. This year it was held at Barsinghausen, Germany.
Two friendly matches were played at nearby towns, one at Stadthagen
and the other at Nienburg . France won the first game 1-0, and the second
game resulted in a 1-1 tie. The two matches drew a combined total of
about 8,000 spectators.

Correction: UEFA decision on Ukraine
- Iceland match
WSW received the following correction about our original report from
Ludvik S. Georgsson, Director on the Board of Iceland's FA
Your news on the proceedings in the bizarre case of UEFA's treatment
on the match Ukraine Iceland are inaccurate, if not to say wrong.
Number one: Iceland never protested. It was the UEFA disciplinary
committee that took the original decision to change the results to 0-3
in Iceland's favour completely on its own without the knowledge of the
FA of Iceland.
Number two: Strangely enough Ukraine never protested formally
against the verdict and did not send in an appeal. So the decision of
0-3 was confirmed in Iceland's favour.
Number three: UEFA's disciplinary inspector Dr. Gerhard Kapl
requested a reopening of the case on the grounds of a wrongful decision
based on additional evidence. After reexamination of the case the orginal
score of the match was declared the final-final score and that was the
correct decision.
The facts are that the whole case was a complete mistake by the UEFA
Control and disciplinary committee. The player, Tetjana Chorna, had
received a ban following an U-18 match in 1998 (Ukraine's last match
of tournament). She is still eligible for the U-18 team and hence should
take the one match ban in Ukraine's U-18 matches played this or next
week. This fact was forgotten by the comittee, that decided on its own,
that the ban should have been taken in a higher category, an A-match
and i.e. against Iceland.
However, if the ban should have been taken in a A-match then the player
had already served it in Ukraine's matches against Germany in Sept/Oct.
1998, where the two nations played for a seat in WWC finals in USA.
When these facts became clear the proper verdict was simple.
As an representative of Iceland's FA and a former chairman of the women's
committee, I can state that Iceland's FA was always very surprised by
the procedures and we sent in requests on how in earth the first decision's
could be motivated, as to us the facts were fairly simple. And we would
like to win our matches fairly and not by some bizarre committee verdicts.
The fact remains however that Ukraine FA did very little to assist UEFA
in clarifying the matter and for example did not appeal against it.
UEFA's Qualification Group 3 results
of Ukraine v Iceland match changed again
By Rainer Hennies
The Ukraine-Iceland game has been decided as a 2-2 draw. This was the
original result of the game. Iceland had protested and UEFA changed
the result into a 3-0 Iceland victory. After another protest from Ukraine
was successful, it is now 2-2 again.

Game report
By Mario Rimati
In the Euro 2001 qualifying match near Pisa Italy squeezed
by the Ukraine 1-0 in a not so brilliant game, both technically and
physically speaking. The savior of the match was once again Lazio's
forward Patrizia Panico who came through 15 minutes into the first half
with the help of fellow national teammate Rita Guarino.
