USA reinforces its superiority over Brazil with a convincing 1-0 win to lift the First Women's Gold Cup 2000

Game report
The U.S. Team put on a scintillating performance for the inaugural Gold Cup Final as they emphasized their continuing superiority over an overconfident Brazilian squad. Brazil spent most of the game in disarray while struggling in front of their own goal to hold back a dominating U.S. Team that was determined to reassert their position in the world after a frustrating 0-0 draw with Brazil in the semi-finals.

They were unable to control or contain players like Parlow and Hamm and the first half was vintage USA from all the team with Mullinix looking particularly good. The control level dropped slightly in the second half following the departure of Parlow and Fair, and Brazil looked more comfortable playing the U.S. substitutions but were unable to assert any sort of threat in the game.

Post game quotes:

Head Coach April Heinrichs
"I think the biggest statement is consistency. We've overcome adversity over the course of this year and played some of the best teams in the world. We've been consistent throughout with not only good results against the best teams, but the second tier of teams that can make a game destructive and difficult to win."

Tiffeny Milbrett
"I found a seam in the penalty box and I was trying send some mental telepathy to Mia to find me. She played a perfect pass. I knew I didn't have much time so I just took a swing at it and found the corner."

Mia Hamm
"Brazil brings a different style to the game and they are an emotional team. They brought out some emotion in us tonight, but we have to use it to your advantage. You can't lose your head and get involved in these ticky-tack fouls and falling all over the place. We just needed to play. I think we did a good job of that tonight."

Game report

What could have been a quality game was marred by some less than competent officiating as so often happens in both men's and women's tournaments like this one. Officials from countries where women's soccer play is in the beginning stages are unable to gain international experience that matches the quality and speed of soccer played by teams like the USA and China. In this match the Canadians were allowed to physically hammer the Chinese players with body blocks without penalty and the game came perilously close to being out of control. It was a shame because by crudely emphasizing their physical size Canada obscured the tremendous improvement in the quality of their international play since the arrival of Head Coach Even Pellerud and real support by Canada's Soccer Association.

Canada came out attacking in the first half but with their long ball game they needed more shape and direction to be able to serve the strikers up front properly. Hooper reinforced her position as a world class player and was always a threat, but Sinclair although possessing great potential was lacking international level soccer savvy in her game so that one saw only her physical play, determination and above average ball control.

The Chinese players played into the Canadians game style in the first half showing little of the control and speed they usually display, but returned to their usual game in the second half and using their skill, speed and shape controlled the field and displayed some of their superiority in a deserved win.

Game report
An improved Canadian squad and a sharper looking U.S. Team together put on an attractive show of their talents particularly in the first half of the match. While the U.S. Team is still some distance from the level reached last year it dominated a Canadian team that attempted to play a wide open game for most of the game. MacMillan's goals were taken so well that they helped raise the fever of the match, and though the midfield level of play for the U.S. was of a lower quality than when both Fair and Foudy are the field at the same time, it showed improvement.

Post game quotes:

Head Coach April Heinrichs
"Both of Shannon's goals were beautiful. Shannon's goal in life, other than winning soccer games, is to rip the skin off the ball every time she kicks it. She ripped the stitching, the logo and coloring off the ball on both those goals."

Captain Julie Foudy
"Brazil is world class and they have risen to one of the elite teams in the world, no doubt. Anytime you walk away from a game like (the 0-0 tie), that is mentally and mentally and physically exhausting, you want another chance. A 0-0 tie for us is really a loss and we are looking forward to meeting them again. We both are talented attacking teams and that always makes for an entertaining match."

Shannon MacMillan
"What I try to do every game is strike the ball hard. Especially, on the second goal, when I saw the (Canada) defense open up, I took advantage and put everything I had on the shot."

Other:
It was the 100th victory for a U.S. Team on American soil.

The U.S. team will not training Sunday, July 2, but will travel to Boston in the morning. The USA faces Brazil for the first CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup title at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on July 3 at Foxboro Stadium (Live on ESPN2).

Match report
A match with two teams with completely different styles of play but with similar theatricals of falling , tripping, and making contact. The quality of the game was disappointing and well below the capabilities of both teams, making for a scrappy and often boring game. There were several outstanding individual performances on both sides, with Brazil's goalkeeper Andreia probably contributing more than any other player on her team to Brazil's win, and China's keeper Gao keeping her team within striking distance. The principle difference between the team was that China failed to convert its several scoring chances and Brazil put their's away.

Game Report

A disappointing and sometimes puzzling performance by the U.S. Team In a game that was not as close as the score would indicate. Except for Fawcett the defensive line seemed unable to handle the Brazilians in the first half, and coupled with attacking players who appeared reluctant to take their shots or take on the leaky looking Brazilian defense. In a bizarre last ten minutes beginning with an unsporting and probably illegal play (Law 12 states that a player may not leave the field of play without the permission of the referee and particularly not deliberately cross the goal line) by Brazil with a player moving into the goal to try and force an offside call on a Hamm alone in front of the net with the ball..... that succeeded! This was followed by a "pat-a-cake" penalty kick by Lilly and of course the weirdest of all ...a coin toss for top place. Now whose idea was that? We are all looking forward to seeing that in the men's Gold Cup it could be the saving grace for the USA.

Post Game Quotes

Head Coach Heinrichs
"I've never seen it happen before, we've heard about it and talked about it, but the ironic thing is to work so hard for 90 minutes and then have it come down to a flip of the thumb. The soccer community that is following the women's game in USA needs to understand that the gap is closing, even from 1996 to 1999, all these countries are emerging as soccer powers. Brazil has made great strides in recent years. Nigeria, China, Germany, Norway and Sweden are all excellent teams. Canada is getting some great results this year against all of the best teams in the world. We understand that evolution and want try to continue to widen the gap, but while we are not pleased with the result, we are pleased to come out on the field and play a great team like Brazil. Watching Siri's development over the last four months has been great for me. If you invest in players and let them play, they will grow. A player such as Siri Mullinix has made a marvelous improvement with her opportunity and has stepped through the door. In some ways, she's kicking the door wide open. She knows she had a critical impact tonight and that our defenders were thankful that she was there so many times. Everyone out there was playing hard and making a great contribution to the game. They were playing in a groove and at halftime we were discussing if we wanted to make a change or change the system, but when it came right down to it, if it's not broken, don't fix it. We were creating plenty of chances, we felt great about our system and I feel like we played a great game." It was the first time in U.S. Women's National Team history that a group winner in a tournament was decided on a coin flip.

Julie Foudy, team captain
"They said, Sissi, you choose. She picked tails, it was heads, and we just walked away. I mean, how do you celebrate a coin toss?"

Game Report
With five regular starters on the bench the "junior" U.S. Team overwhelmed a Costa Rica team that rarely left their own half.

Even with Serlenga's first career international hat-trick the U.S. Team failed to beat Brazil's total goal number so far. In a bizarre rule if Brazil and the USA teams draw their game they will toss a coin ( or draw straws) for their semi-final place.

Post Game Quotes

Head Coach Heinrichs
"It's very difficult to come back after scoring 11 goals against Trinidad and Tobago on Friday and put on a similar performance," said Heinrichs. "But it's tribute to the individual and team discipline, and the commitment to pursue excellence, that we came after them today. Every time we step out on the field as the United States team we have players in all positions that can play a role and be the centerpiece of the game for us. Sometimes our young players struggle with the fact that there are so many good players on the team. It can be a difficult position when they are playing next to 10 or 11 of the best players in the world. But with a lot of players getting some playing time today, and performing well, we are trying to push several little buttons that will help players' confidence and development. We want to develop the team and individuals between now and the Olympics. We want to give players playing time, but as much as our coaches like to think that players are learning on the bench, they don't learn nearly as much as they do playing on the field. We've really tried to pursue winning games and tournaments, but never at the price of player development. Come next month and August, we'll start focusing more on results as our players will be very played in by then."

Three goal Nikki Serlenga
"It felt great to play a full game and get in the rhythm," said Serlenga. "To get the goals is an added bonus, but everyone loves to get the chance to perform and contribute to winning on this team."

The USA will not train tomorrow and will travel to Boston in the evening in preparation for its match against Brazil on Tuesday, then travel back to Louisville, Ky., on Wednesday morning.

Game Report: As expected, the U.S. Completely dominated the match and perhaps helped give, television viewers who are not familiar with the U.S. Team, an understanding of the huge difference between the USA and China and the new young teams from small countries.

Parlow continued to impress and move closer to becoming the dominating striker for the USA as predicted by WSW last year. At the Thursday press conference WSW asked Heinrichs as to why Fair moved to midfield where she has performed magnificently in recent games. She is perhaps the most accurate passer of the ball on the team and along with her incredible workrate and speed the center mid-field position allows her to use her talents to the utmost, as she did in this game. Heinrichs said that her assistant coach told Fair that she was a really good jack of all trades but master of none, and that she should decide where she would like to play and become a master of that position. She chose center midfield.

Excerpts from the U.S. National Team Tournament Preview Conference Call June 22, 2000

April Heinrichs - U.S. National Team Head Coach
Julie Foudy - Team Co-Captain

April Heinrichs

Her thoughts on the job as National Team coach so far
"I haven't felt nervous on the bench, I haven't felt pressure. These girls play so hard that as a coach you don't have to get on them. You get a sense that with this team you are always in it, and it takes the pressure off as a coach."

On the two young goalkeepers on the team
"Every day our two young goalkeepers step in the goal, their growth is so quick that it is remarkable. Every time Jenny Graham and Siri Mullinix step in the goal, they are getting better and better every day, and I have great confidence in both of them."

On how her job will change once the WUSA begins play
"I feel like I will get some sleep. I haven't given it much thought. The league is going to be a springboard for improvements for the US national team. The girls are talking about it every day, and are extremely excited to get started."

On holding back game strategies from an opposing national team to maintain an advantage before the Olympics
"It's my sense that you don't hold everything back; At the same time, you don't give them everything. The way we'll approach that is by mixing up the starting lineups and systems of play, not for the sake of throwing off our opponent or keeping them guessing, but because we want to make sure that all the tools in the shed are sharp and ready to go. It doesn't matter what the opponent is doing, we have something else that we've had success with and we can counteract anything they do."

On pre-tournament preparations and looking ahead to a possible rematch with China
"Our biggest focus this week is to push the ball around as much as possible and attack against Trinidad & Tobago. We're certainly not looking to China because we have three games to play. Our journey through the Gold Cup and ultimately our performance at the end of the Gold Cup are important to us."

On the recent Pacific Cup in Australia
"I think we'll look back on the schedule and say that one of the best things we could have done was go to Australia for the Pacific Cup. One of the best things we could have done was go to Europe to play Norway, China and Germany. There were so many parallels that the Pacific Cup share with the experience we'll have in Australia for the Olympics...the travel to get there, the food, the culture, the climate. The amount of games, and the fact that we could face adversity early in the tournament like we did in the first round of the Pacific Cup, all of these things were great lessons for us. I feel that it was a phenomenal dry run for us in so many ways."

On setting goals for the team
" I believe in controllable goal-setting. I don't have control over wins and losses, but I have control over the style of play, the system of play and who we play, and our tactics. I have set a lot of goals on an individual basis for the players and the team. I don't believe in a lot of long-term goals. For every one long-term goal I set four short-term goals. One of the goals I've set for the team is performing well abroad. That's a critical thing we've been talking about since March. Consistency and the ability to perform not once, but two nights later, two nights after that, two nights later, and ultimately in the final, is critical."

On her plans for Michelle Akers
"It's hard to tell right now when she'll be back. She's spent 11 months away from team, and that's a long time. She's had numerous knee surgeries, but has never had shoulder surgery, and one of the things I've been told is that shoulder surgery is one of the single most painful surgeries you can have. We're taking it week-to-week with her. What we know is that even when she's rusty she's still a world class player."

On her plans for selecting players for the Gold Cup
"We will start with the roster we feel will suit the system we'll play and will make substitutes from there. ,We don't turn our faucet on and off. We turn it on and the water flows the whole time. Goals come and goals go in the game of soccer. We can't pick and choose when we're going to let them flow and when we're not going to let them flow. We're going to keep the faucet on full force. We will not pull in the reigns and hold up on any team."

Her thoughts on Canada
"Canada are much more organized than they ever were before. Their spirit and fight are greater than ever before. You can see a good coach immediately in terms of organization and spirit of players, and I believe that hiring their new coach has been helpful. We saw Canada in Algarve Cup, in the Nike U.S. Cup, in Australia, and now for the Gold Cup, so they're getting around. They're going to be a great CONCACAF opponent."

On the possible decision to replace injured veterans with younger players
"Without them out on the field, there isn't going to be a decision to make. We are going to allow them to recover so they can be brought back to the team, and then we will make some decisions. Let's see how long the veterans are out . (Carla)Overbeck was with us for most of the year. Michelle (Akers) is the more difficult one. She has had a career sitting out for months and then able to come back out with great confidence."

Julie Foudy

On how life has changed since the Women's World Cup victory
"Women's World Cup has had a great effect on us whenever we travel. Coming into Hershey (Penn.) yesterday there were 15 cameras and a squadron of reporters and fans, which is great to see. I get a lot of free meals now...a lot of free donuts, which is a bonus. We joke all the time about A.C. and B.C., after the Cup and before the Cup, and the way people treat you. We always knew World Cup was going to be a great success, but I'm always amazed that we reached such a broad range of people. The soccer community has always been passionate supporters of this team, but it's been neat to see the impact, not only on the soccer world."

On the importance of the Gold Cup
"The Gold Cup is fantastic because it gives us a chance to play other teams from our region on the women's side of the game. On top of that, you have a 5 game rhythm, like the Olympics, which is beneficial for us. It's a great opportunity to emulate what we'll face in the Olympics."

On the importance of experience in tournaments
"Obviously a lot of us have been in a situation before where you think you're out and all of a sudden the tide turns like it did in Australia. It helps that this team in never willing to say 'OK, that's it, we lost to China, the tournament is over'. We have to go into each game trying to score goals, because we could always get through on goal differential, and that's what happened in Australia in the Pacific Cup."

On sustaining momentum created for women's soccer by the Women's World Cup
"Especially with this being an Olympic year, and coming off the success of last year, we see this as a great opportunity to show what we can do. Hopefully, with the league starting, Women's soccer will be on the map forever."

On Head Coach April Heinrichs
"We always knew April would eventually be the Women's National Team coach. It was only a question of when. A few of us had played with her, so we knew the qualities she brings. The wonderful thing she brought as a player, her competitiveness and her passion, we've seen in her coaching as well, so we were ecstatic when she was named coach."

On the Women's Team's role as crusaders for the sport in America
"I think the men's team does that as well. Any opportunity we get to promote the sport on both the men's side and the women's side we look to as an advantage. But it is definitely done on both the men's and women's side."

On the team's opponents in the Olympics
"I really like our group. At the draw there were a lot of ooh's and aah's. When you get to the Olympic level, where there are only eight teams, there's no easy draw. Our mentality is that you have to get through every team to be a champion."

On facing Brazil in the Gold Cup
"It is very similar to last years team. They are a very technical team, very similar to their men's team. They are very athletic very skillful. We always enjoy playing them, they play with great finesse and are a very good team."
