Australia Under-19 National Team roster for first FIFA U-19 World Championsip

The Matildas defeated rivals New Zealand in the final of the Oceania U-19 Qualifying Tournament in Tonga earlier this year. Since then they have lost two starters through injury. Midfielder Collette McCallum (knee reconstruction) and striker Lisa De Vanna (leg). Rose Dunne, who was previously a striker and is now a defender, along with defender Lorissa Stevens have joined the team. Captain Kate McShea , who competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games at age of seventeen, leads the team. The squad will assemble in Sydney on Sunday August, 4th., and undergo physical/medical testing before departing for Canada the following day. They will play two final pre-tournament warm-up matches in Canada against countries from other groups.

Comments by Head Coach Mulvey

I think it’s fair to say every Youth player has had a fair opportunity to push their case, if not in camp, then in national championships and national league. I’m quite confident that the eighteen chosen are the best available – they give the side good balance defensively and a lot of attacking options. The players have been working hard in their NTC programs, but the one thing missing in our preparation has been international competition. However, I have full confidence in the players being ready to give of their best for their country.  This is certainly the biggest challenge yet for these players apart from Kate McShea, and I’m confident that we’re up for the challenge.
