Game report

By Colin A. Aldis

As usual, the losers of the semi-finals played for the bronze medals, as a fore-runner of the final. Although it was at senior level, these two countries met at the same stage at the 2000 Olympics, when Germany won 2-1.

On a cool morning, Germany went close to an opening goal after 10 minutes, when Annelie Brendel played the ball forward into the area for Linda Bresonik, whose low shot from 16 metres hit the right post, and bounced clear. Soon after, Isabel Bachor hit a shot from 22 metres over the bar. Brazil responded with Daniela trying an angled shot from the right, but the ball flew just wide of the left post.

On the half-hour mark, there was a chance for Germany, with Isabel Bachor striking a low shot from 16 metres, but Giselle did brilliantly to dive full length to her right to push the ball away. Play went quickly to the other end, and Brazil scored, an angled pass to the right, to Cristiane and she curled the ball just inside the right post, past a despairing dive of Miriam Elling. Then Marta showed her amazing ball skills to get passed two defenders, and hit a strong angled shot from the left, but Miriam Elling just managed to deflect the ball wide.

Half-Time: 1-0 to Brazil.

Germany came out for the second half, playing strongly and soon equalised, a good passing move, from right to left, by Anne Sabel and then Viola Odebrecht, to Isabel Bachor who hit a great shot over Giselle from 16 metres, into the roof of the net.

There were a few chances through the rest of the game, but no real dramatic moments, and it went directly to penalties.

Sadly Brazilian captain Daniela saw her effort saved by Miriam Elling, the 9th spot kick, with the score at 3-3, and Sarah Gunther stepped forward, hit her shot low and into the left corner for the ultimate winner.

Both teams were presented with medals, with FIFA President JS Blatter leading the presentation party.
