August 17, 2003 Mexico tastes revenge in Pan American Games 2003 Final standings It has been a frustrating couple of months for the Mexico National Team. After finishing third in the CONCACAF region qualifying at the end of last year, they fell to Japan in the final play-off opportunity to reach FIFA World Cup USA 2003. In the consolation Pan American Games, they lost to Argentina in the group stage and Canada in the semi-final. With a final chance to gain revenge on a FIFA World Cup finalist and to get in the medals at the Pan Am Games, La Tri Femenil responded admirably, brushing aside a clearly fatigued Argentina. Fatima Leyva and Iris Mora struck in the first half to give the Mexicans a 2-1 lead at the break. In the second half, Mayra Rosales and Andrea Moreno scored in the 84th and 89th minutes respectively to seal the result. Argentina end up fourth in the tournament and out of the medal places. The FIFA World Cup debutantes make their finals debut this September and will be joined in challenging Group C with Canada, as well as Germany and Japan. Brazil are in Group B along with Norway, France and Korea Republic.
