Haiti take
a comfortable advantage into second leg of series Haiti scored two goals in the first half en route to a 3:0 victory over Suriname in the first leg of the playoff series for the lone remaining Caribbean Zone berth to the 2002 FC Women's Gold Cup Finals at Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Myrlande Bien Aime broke the scoreless deadlock for the hosts just before the half hour, finding a seam in the Surinamese defence and putting her effort past keeper Natalie Omzitig. As Haiti continued to put pressure on their opponents's back line, they added another tally before the interval. Viola Nord's strike finding the back of the net in the 42nd minutes, after the teams had battled for the first 35 minutes of the second half without scoring. Judith Pierre put the match out of reach with a marker 10 minutes from time, giving the hosts a comfortable lead entering the second leg of the series on Tuesday September 10th., also in Port-au-Prince. Should they maintain their lead in the second leg of the series, Haiti will become the Caribbean's third and final representative at the Confederation's signature even for women's national teams. The winner of the series will be placed in Group B, joining Canada, Costa Rica and Jamaica in Victoria, British Columbia.
