History repeats itself with opening match against Sweden

The opening match for the USA in the 1991 World Cup was also against Sweden in Panyu, China on November 17th. We were ahead by three goals, two by Carin Jennings (now Gabarra), one by a young Hamm, and then Sweden made its move. They scored two goals and captured the momentum, and attacked continuously as we clung desperately to our lead. The 3-2 win for us was very important because we had several key players including Joy Biefeld (now Fawcett) who were nursing injuries, and we were able to get them healthy in the next matches. Sweden went on to take the Bronze Medal for third place, and were most supportive of the USA when we won the Gold.
