It can be hazardous for your health when playing in your opponent's goal area
Abby Wambach’s injury reminds
one of the head injury that knocked the great attacker Michelle Akers out of
the 1988 trial FIFA Championship in China.
As in the men’s game, strikers such as these two are always undergoing
physical scrutiny by the opposition defense whose purpose is to stop them from
displaying their star attacking qualities in front of the goal.
It is a particular dangerous situation because the referee is mainly watching
the ball, and his assistants are trying to catch up with the offense, so that
what goes on in the the box is often missed by them.
