The Reluctant Superstar--A must read for fans of women's soccer and Mia Hamm !

This week's edition of Sports Illustrated has an interesting and different article than anything previously written about Mia Hamm. By adding depth and color to her life history from birth to the present day it helps one understand how she has become such a dominant force in rapid growth of the women's game, while dreading the public scrutiny that come with her personal success and popularity. With the same marvelous commitment to sharing and helping anyone in need that her parents have demonstrated throughout her life, it is not surprising that the career and development of this sensitive, intelligent woman makes such an absorbing read. It should also be helpful and meaningful for girls and young women who can relate to the personal difficulties of handling a similar inner intensity as they grow up.

Gary Smith deliberate use of an aggressive writing style, almost staccato at times, helps to avoid the sugary infantile approach seen in many previous articles about Mia that appeared designed to cause her the most embarrassment.

With Mia Hamm on the front cover this is a must read as the Fourth FIFA Women's World Cup begins.
