Some more thoughts on the USA v Panama game

This match reminded me of the difficulties the U.S. Team faced after defeating Mexico 12-0 in the World Cup 1991 CONCACAF qualifying competition in Haiti in April, 1991. There was no feeling of jubilation about such a score, instead we felt concerned that our skills had not reached a level where we could hold a ball in order not to embarrass an opponent, yet not risk losing important games. Head Coach Dorrance had made an effort by bringing in all of the substitutes we were allowed at half time, yet one of those players, Brandy Chastain who was fighting for a starting place, scored five goals. After five games the U.S. scoring record was 49-0. We had already developed a belief that along with our growing success in the international womenıs game came an obligation to support and encourage the growth of womenıs soccer. There is no joy for dominant teams like the U.S. in such huge scores in one sided games since they reflect the difficulties women in sports face in too many countries, and are reminders of their own difficult growth against the odds. There is a fine line between imposing a winning presence and taking hope and dreams away from players struggling to improve and reach the top themselves.

Head Coach Heinrichs was captain of that 1991 team in Haiti, and her immediate early substitutions and team attitude in this game was a class performance.
