Comments
From at least a psychological point of view, Morace's Lazio becomes
a stronger contender for the championship title as it clinched 1st place
during the 3rd consecutive match played on home field against Lugo in a
3-0 victory. The 1st place position might only be momentary because two
games, Gravina-Milan and Modena-Torres, were not played due to an
insufficient number of players and poor weather conditions respectively.
The Lazio-Lugo match saw the Roman team left with ten players as Alvino
was ejected for a double yellow-card. Patrizia Panico once again came
through, this time with two goals, with the third being scored by her
national teammate Zorri. What happened, or better yet what didn't
happen, in the two matches mentioned above was rather unusual: after
only 9 minutes Gravina (which by the way showed up with only the minimum
number of 7 players on the field) found itself down to 6 players due to an
injury. Regulations prevailed and so the match was suspended. In this
case Milan will be most likely awarded the 2-0 victory as the other team
was not able to finish the match. Modena-Torres was suspended with 10
minutes left in the 1-1 match because of poor visibility due to fog.
The game will be re-scheduled at a later date.

The championship schedule has been slightly modified as a result of the
upcoming tournament in Australia of the Italian national female team.
This year Lugo, as a result of the transfer of many players from one
club to another, is missing national team captain Carta and Ulivi (both
are playing for Picenum alongside of former Modena player Jill Rutten).
Lazio is also flying high thanks to Patrizia Panico's great performance
due in part to the meticulous preparation and guidance of her coach,
Carolina Morace.

Morace's Lazio came down like an avalanche on Gravina Catania with a
6-0 result on their home field. National team player Patrizia Panico scored 4
goals to lead the team to an easy victory over Gravina( missing
3 of its key players). Panico's performance has definitely convinced
head coach Facchin to call her to the next training camp with the rest
of the national team scheduled for Dec. 6th. Some believe that Carolina's
heir just might be wearing a Lazio shirt (in the name of Panico of
course).

Morace's Lazio team inches closer to 1st place as they tied Agliana in an
away match. Lazio was left in the 2nd half with 10 players due to a red
card. National team member Zorri came through with 2 goals for Lazio.
There was a small upset as Torres fell to Geas in a 1-2 match. Milan,
playing at Fiammamonza, won 4-0 to secure along with Torres 1st place in
the standings even though Lazio is not too far behind with a margin of 2
points.

Carolina Morace's Lazio beat Fiammamonza (the club where Natalina Levati, the president of the Italian Female Division, worked alongside of her coach-husband for 28 years), to gain 2nd position in the Italian championship.

This game had two women head coaches, Morace and Czech national team player Novakova who is also a player and scored Fiammamonza's only goal. Lazio is now 3 points away from 1st place Torres who bulldozed

Lugo 5-1 (hat-trick by Guarino). The Roman club is now tied for 2nd place along with Milan which beat last place Bologna.

Twenty-three year-old national team member and forward Patrizia Panico scored 5 goals in a major upset victory on Saturday as Morace's Lazio defeated Pisa in a 6-0 home match. Panico also scored on a penalty kick as the other goal was scored by national teammate Tatiana Zorri. The win propels both the Roman team to 2nd place along with four other teams in the standings and Panico at the top of a small group of leading goalscorers. Torres, victory against Milan places it alone in command of the championship. The interesting match will be next week as Milan faces second-last Bologna.

News

January 25, 1999 from Mario Rimati

The "Old man of Italian female soccer" is back: 66 year-old Sergio Guenza, probably Italy's foremost expert on the game has taken over the helm of Lazio as head coach given Carolina Morace's "adieu" over financial matters. Some may recall that Guenza was, for many years, the head coach of the national team (with Carolina being its captain) and came 2nd behind Germany in the 1997 European championship final (eliminating along the way arch-enemy Norway with two goals by Morace). Guenza began his long coaching career with the Roman club, Italy's oldest female team, winning 4 "scudetti" (championship titles). Will this mean that one day he'll return as national team head coach? That remains to be seen? In the meantime, he declined from commenting specifically on Morace's resignation but added that her work up to now had been rather satisfactory and that he hopes to continue along that track with the help of the entire team. His hopes were materialized Lazio won 3-0 in an away game against Verona. The big upset came as Torres defeated Fiammamonza 7-2. Milan still commands 1st place with Torres and Lazio not too far away.

American Jill Rutten (former Modena player) is now playing for Pisa.

The big news this year is that at the helm of Lazio is former national team captain Carolina Morace (12 championship titles to her name), but not as a
player this time (at least not for the moment) but as head coach. There
are speculations that she'll be unable to sit permanently on the bench
for too long and will perhaps follow in the footsteps of her
predecessor, former national teammate Betty Bavagnoli, as the team's
player-coach, depending how Lazio performs this year.

Morace's debut on Lazio's bench was a positive one, even though the team
ended up playing with 10 players due to a foul from behind. The game
against Picenum also saw the 1st division debut of 16 year-old Maria
Sorvillo who played several years with Roma's 2nd division team (the
team where I've been coaching the g.keepers for the last 3 seasons).
Carolina also fielded Bavagnoli for this important match. The head
coach was asked after the game her thoughts of watching the game from
the bench as opposed to the field: "I didn't really feel anything in
particular except for the fact of feeling slightly older. The girls
though did end up coming through for me."

Breakdown of the players who have moved from one club to another:

Brenzan (national g.keeper) Torres to Milan (Supercup champions)
Madsen defender Lugo to Milan
Panico* forward Modena to Lazio
Tesse* midfielder Modena to Lazio
Nappi* g.keeper Modena to Lazio
Deiana defender Cascine to V.Torres
Tavalazzi defender Cascine to V.Torres
Guarino forward Cascine to V.Torres
Forlucci g.keeper Agliana to Torres
Sberti forward Pisa to Agliana
Salmaso defender Lugo to Modena
Miniati defender Torino to Picenum
Nannini defender Algiana to Picenum
Carta midfielder Lugo to Picenum
Ulivi forward Lugo to Picenum

*N.B. Morace's former teammates at Modena. The team has lost several
players to other teams. For the last two seasons Modena has dominated
the standings and just last season won the championship with Morace. C.
Vica, last season's runner-up to Modena has dropped down to the 2nd
division due to financial problems.

The Serie A will pick up again in two weeks' time as the national team
will meet at the technical training center in Coverciano.
Hopefully by that time Italy's new national team head coach will be
appointed (Sergio Vatta recently walked out on the team after a record 9
months). The probable candidate might be Carlo Facchin, the former head
coach of the five-a-side national (male) team.

The other news is that out of 90 referees involved in the female
championship this season, 18 are women, a number which is constantly on
the rise in Italy.

We presume that more coverage of female soccer in Italy will take place
now that Carolina is head coach of a 1st division team.

Carlo Facchin appointed as new Head Coach of Italy's National Women's Team.

Facchin was born in Italy on August 27, 1938. As a player he played in
all three Italian professional soccer divisions with 10 different
clubs. He's been a 1st level professional coach since 1984. Since the
1987/88 season he's been a national coaching instructor of the Italian
Soccer Federation's technical division.

Facchin was head coach from 1990-91 and from 1993-97 of the national
five-a-side men's team. His victories have been as follows:

In 1997/98 he was head coach of the Under-15 and Under-16 men's teams
-----------------------
Vittorio Russo remains as Head Coach of the Under-18 National Women's Team.

Morace's Modena To Square Off Against Cascine Vica

Morace's Modena to square off against Cascine Vica in final and decisive game for the championship title Carolina Morace scored 5 goals to help Modena reach the final against Cascine Vica for the 1st division title match. America's Jill Rutten also scored in the 9-0 victory over last place Sorrento (which will be relegated to the 2nd division along with Riva and Segrate in next season's championship).

In the other important match of the day, C. Vica won 5-1 against Agliana. Both Modena and C.Vica have 79 points each so the final match will be played next Sunday on a neutral field. Morace is once again leading goalscorer of the championship with 41 goals.

Joseph Blatter Promises That If Elected To Fifa Presidency He Will Include A Woman In The Fifa Executive Committee--Why Only One?

Joseph Blatter promises that if elected to FIFA presidency he will include a woman in the FIFA Executive Committee--why only one? Equality suggests that 20% should be women!

Italian sports newspapers reported on Sunday that FIFA Secretary General Joseph Blatter, a candidate for the presidency of the world governing body of soccer, has said that if elected he will promise to include a woman in the Executive Committee of FIFA. According to Blatter, this will bring some badly needed "fresh air" to FIFA. He also went on to say that it only makes sense to have a woman in the executive body considering that "out of 200 million registered players in the world, 40 million are women".

England v Italy, International Friendly
Report by Colin Aldis

In the 20th meeting between these two European rivals (the highest number for England against International teams) Italy showed why they are likely to reach the 3rd FIFA World Cup Finals next year, in a 2-1 win.

On a wet, cold and windy evening in Birmingham, England started well and could have scored in the 2nd minute. Gillian Coultard (winning cap No. 105) sent a long ball forward, and Melanie Garside was clear of the defence. But on the edge of the penalty area, Italian keeper Francesca Pulera just managed to clear the danger with her feet.

England kept up the early pressure with a corner on the right in the 5th minute, Susan Smith swung the ball in perfectly for Faye White, to send a header over the keeper and into the net, for the Arsenal defender's first international goal. After this early setback, Italy (who recently won a vital match against France), settled down to play some neat, constructive football. Their first chance came a minute later when Patrizia Panico hit a shot directly at Pauline Cope. Then a cross from the left by Florinda Ciardi was cleared by Susan Smith, with the return shot by Damiana Deiana going just wide of the right post.

In the 13th minute, Italy won a corner on the right, taken by Tatiana Zorri, but Gillian Coultard was in position to make the clearance. Then Sam Britton had to head away a free kick, followed by a shot from the left by Patrizia Panico, which curled past the right post.

In the 28th minute, England created a chance when Melanie Garside passed the ball inside for Gillian Coultard, who hit a low shot just wide of the left post. Moments later, Roberta Stefanelli had to limp off for treatment, with Luisa Marchio coming on to replace her after a short debate. Then Italian captain, Antonella Carta had a typical strong shot blocked, followed by another which went wide of the right post.

In the 37th minute, Danielle Murphy was shown the yellow card by local Premiership referee, Mike Reed for a reckless tackle on Anna Duo. The Italian defender had to be stretchered off and she was replaced a couple of minutes later. Just before the change, Claire Utley saw a strong shot deflected for a corner on the left. Elisa Miniati came on to help clear the danger and Italy responded by winning a corner on the right, but Danielle Murphy headed the ball away for a throw. Italy then won another corner on the right, which allowed Antonella Carta another shot, which flew just wide of the left post. Moments before the half- time whistle, Florinda Ciardi and Tatiana Zorri combined well to get the ball to Rita Guarino, but her close range shot also went just wide of the left post. This was followed by a free kick by Florinda Ciardi, but the ball hit the wall and was cleared.

Both sides made changes at the start of the second half, the 2 in-effective forwards for England, (mostly due to poor service) Joanne Broadhurst and Melanie Garside, being replaced by Marie- Anne Catterall and Alex Cottier. For Italy, goalkeeper Francesca Pulera was replaced by Fabiana Comin, Rita Guarino was replaced by Roberta Ulivi and Patrizia Panico replaced by Patrizia Sberti.

In the 50th minute, Italy won a corner on the right, but Tatianaa Zorri directed the ball behind the goal. England replied with a run and cross from the left by Alex Cottier, which allowed Claire Utley a shot at goal, from just outside the penalty area, but the ball swerved away from the right post. A few minutes later, Italy forced a corner on the left, with the ball only partially cleared, as Patrizia Sberti was put clear on goal, but Pauline Cope performed heroics, to block the first shot and as the ball ran free, she dived down to push it away for another corner to the 'Azzuri'. This one was headed clear by Sam Britton, but England had not heeded the previous warning as the diminutive Patrizia Sberti, broke away, but hit a strong shot directly at Pauline Cope.

England replied with another cross from the left by Alex Cottier, but her Croydon team-mate Tara Proctor could only steer the ball wide, although it must have been deflected, as England were given a corner on the right. Susan Smith swung the ball in, but as Faye White headed it over the bar, Mr. Reed blew up for some pushing.

In the 62nd minute, Italy made two more changes, Florinda Ciardi, being replaced by a Piera Magglio, and Antonella Carta replaced by Federica D'Astolfo. A couple of minutes later, Gillian Coultard made a rare error, but Pauline Cope was quick to clear the danger. Then Manuella Tesse tried a curling shot from the right which went just over the left post. The Patrizia Sberti again broke clear but a superb last ditch tackle by Faye White saw the ball going for a corner on the left. The lay back to Tatiana Zorri allowed the Italian a shooting chance but the ball swerved wide of the right post.

All this possession and chances finally yielded an equaliser also in a surprising way. Patrizia Sberti broke clear again, on the right and wide enough that it did not appear dangerous, but with great skill she steered the ball between a relaxed Pauline Cope and the right post into the far corner, from an 'impossible' angle. England responded with several chances, Susan Smith floating in a free kick from the right, which was headed out Elisa Miniati. Then the young Tranmere Rovers wing- back took a corner on the right, but as the ball came over, Kelly Smith fouled one of the Italian defenders.

In the 74th minute, Pauline Cope was given a rest, and Rachael Brown came on. Moments later, Hope Powell tried a long range shot which drifted wide of the right post. From the goal kick, England won possession and three young players combined well to create a chance, Susan Smith showing good skill and using Claire Utley to get the ball to Danielle Murphy, who hit a shot from 20 metres just over the corner of the left post and bar. For Rachael Brown, it was virtually a repeat of a year ago as Italy won a free kick almost central and 20 metres from goal. Substitute, Piera Maglio saw the chance to hammer the ball pastthe wall into the left corner, despite a full length dive by the young keeper. England then took off Sam Britton, to be replaced by Becky Easton, but Italy effectively 'shut up shop', with the next chance going to them in the 84th minute. The corner on the right allowed Federica D'Astolfo to hit a powerful shot on target, but Rachael Brown did well to push the ball away.

A couple of minutes later, Tara Proctor was hurt by a crude tackle by Tatiana Zorri, which earned the Italian a caution and the ball went for a corner on the right. As Susan Smith sent the ball, there was a foul on the Italian keeper. As the clock moved into stoppage time, England brought on Maureen Marley to replace the limping Tara Proctor and Italy brought on Rosaria Iannuzzelli (a 2nd player wearing No. 18) to replace Tatiana Zorri.

Two minutes later, Italy had achieved a another victory against England, the ninth time they have won in the series dating back to 1976. England have won 5, with the others drawn and the last win for England was 10 years ago.

Italy's National Women's team played to a 0-0 tie against Olympic Silver-medalist China in a friendly match on Italy's Adriatic coast. The game was moved from Campobasso to the town of Termoli due to the cold weather conditions that have been plaguing Italy in the last couple of days. Italy had some good chances of scoring with Ulivi, Duo, and Panico. Head Coach Vatta appeared satisfied with the result and is now preparing for the April 11th qualifying match against France.
