Not in recent memory has a back-to-back championship title been witnessed in Italian soccer: last week Milan's male club won its 16th "scudetto" (championship title) under the presidency of Italy's richest man, Silvio Berlusconi. This week national team goalkeeper Giorgia Brenzan's Milan clinched the coveted title with just one point over second-place contender Torres. Patrizia Panico and Manuela Tesse's Lazio instead finished third. The only consolation for the Roman club is that its star player Panico swept aside last year's record of 47 goals by former national team captain Carolina Morace with 51 goals for the 1998/99 season. Goalkeepers of this summer's World Cup have been warned!
Three teams in the meantime will unfortunately be relegated to the 2nd division for the 1999/2000 championship. They are: Modena (last year's champions with Morace, Tesse, Rutten and Panico), Lugo and Fiammamonza.

Just one more match remains in the Italian championship in order to determine this year's winner. Milan still remains at the helm separated by just 3 points from second-place Torres. Patrizia Panico managed to score one goal to put her two goals shy of Morace's last year record of 47 goals, even though her Lazio bowed 2-3 in a home match to Verona. Jill Rutten of Pisa scored her club's only goal to tie 1-1- against Bologna. Fiammamonza in the meantime was beaten 1-2 by Torres and presumably will be relegated to the second division next year.

Commentary
By Mario Rimati
After a pause in order to give Italy's Under-18 national team its chance to qualify against the Finns in Vaasa, Finland on May 8th and the A national team to prepare itself for the friendly match against defending World Cup champions Norway on May 12th, the Italian championship resumed with Milan just two games away from putting its hands on the championship title as it won its away match against Lugo. In the meantime, Lazio's Panico, even though scoreless in the Norway match, scored twice to inch closer to Morace's record of 47 goals in last year's season. Torres also won against Jill Rutten's Pisa placing it just three points behind first place Milan. Anything can happen as the race winds down to the finish line.

Latest from Italy Serie
A
Milan beat Lazio yesterday (on Lazio's home field) 4-2 because of the rained
out match 2 weeks ago. With only 3 games left
this means that Milan might have just clinched the national title. Panico
managed to score one goal now putting her at 41 for this season, 6 shy of
Morace's record of last year. Milan's goalkeeper is National Team keeper
Giorgia Brenzan.

Torres wins a mere 12-0 against former national champions Modena with 8 goals by national team player Guarino. The major upset occurred as Modena traveled to Torres' home field with only 7 players. Guarino ties Patrizia Panico's 37 goals who scored 4 goals in Lazio's match against Lugo. In the meantime, Milan continues its winning streak with a 4-0 victory over Gravina. Both Milan and Lazio still have to make up one game each.

The "Big Match" between Lazio-Milan was unfortunately suspended in the first minutes of the second half due to rain. Milan was leading 2 goals to 1. The match will have to be re-scheduled at a later date still to be determined. First-place Torres took advantage of Rome's poor weather conditions by maintaining its lead with a 4-1 victory against Picenum. Spaniard Parejo scored twice as did national team player Guarino.
It is rather a pity that the Lazio-Milan game was suspended because for the first time in the annals of Italian women's soccer the match was to be televised on the new sports satellite channel of RAI (the Italian state-run television network). The historic agreement came about thanks to the work of Lazio's general director and the president of the Italian women's division, Mrs. Natalina Ceraso Levati. Thewomen's match was originally to have taken place at Rome's Olympic stadium prior to the Lazio-Juventus men's soccer match but was canceled at the last moment due to a lack of dressing room space for both the women and the men. There are plans next year for 8 women's matches to be televised by RAI.
In other good news Lazio and national team player Manuela Tesse's suspension until May 31st has been reduced to May 7th. This will give Tesse the opportunity to properly train for Italy's first match against European champions Germany on June 20th in Los Angeles. In the meantime, Italy's A national team squares off in a friendly match against Sweden in Soverato (Calabria) on April 21st.

The rankings of Italy's "Serie A" still remain unchanged as the "Big Three" continue winning. Lazio, who is missing national team player Manuela Tesse for a long-term championship AND national team suspension which will expire May 31st due to having walked out recently during a friendly match against an American youth team (thus leaving national team coach Facchin in a bind as the World Cup is just around the corner), managed to win 5-1 in its away match against Gravina. Two of the five goals were scored by Panico who maintains her supremacy as league leading goalscorer. Milan squeezed by Agliana 3-2 while Torres beat Sarzana 7-2 in its away match.
In other female soccer-related news a first took place in Italy as an all-woman referee trio refed a men's amateur league game in southern Italy. Twenty-eight year old Silvia Spinelli, a lawyer by profession, was flanked by twenty-two year-old Carla Di Carlo and twenty-one year-old Belinda Favia as lineswomen.

All remains the same in Italy's women's "Serie A" championship as the big three, Milan, Torres and Lazio all won their matches. Playing on their home field Lazio managed to sail by 4th place Agliana 3-0 with a goal by leading goalscorer Panico. Milan's result against Fiammamonza was identical to the Lazio match, while Torres squeezed by Geas in its away match 1-0.
In the meantime, National Team Head Coach Carlo Facchin, who was at the recent Algarve Cup scrutinizing potential future World Cup opponents, has organized a three-day training camp which will take place in the Milan area.

It was a strange weekend for Italy's 1st division championship as Torino didn't show up for its match against Torres (Torres will probably be awarded the victory) and 1st place Milan narrowly squeezed by Pisa with 9 minutes left in its away match against Jill Rutten's team. Panico's Lazio in the meantime sailed to an easy 3-0 victory over Bardolino in its away match. Two of Lazio's 3 goals were scored by Patrizia Panico

Milan fell to Torres 1-2 as the Sardinian team inched closer to 1st place. In another important away match Lazio managed to squeeze by Jill Rutten's Pisa by a score of 3-2. The "lady killer" of female soccer, Patrizia Panico, helped her teammates by scoring 2 goals. This now puts her on top of the race for leading goalscorer with 26 goals. Sergio Guenza's Lazio is now 5 points away from 1st place Milan. The victory was all that much sweeter as Lazio was missing some key players due to disqualifications from previous matches.

A positive step forward has been taken in Spanish (male) soccer. For the first time ever the 4th referee in a men's match has been a woman! Twenty-two year-old Carolina Domenech was present at the 1st division Espanyol-Deportivo match. She is the daughter of a former referee and lives in Ibiza. The news was reported in Italian sports dailies (the Italians naturally highlighted the fact that she's "blonde and a beautiful woman") as well as in yesterday's television sports news segment.
In the women's Serie A championship Milan and Lazio bulldozed their way ahead by winning respectively 4-1 and 6-1. Panico is once again the leading goalscorer with two goals in Lazio's win over Bologna. Milan's victory came at the hands of Picenum.

Last weekend saw Milan fly away with 1st place as it defeated Sarzana 3-0 in an away match. Its closest two contenders, Torres and Lazio, playing against each other, tied at 0-0. Lazio was missing one of its key players, mid-fielder and national team player Manuela Tesse, who was a last minute stand in for injured national team captain Antonella Carta as Italy's representative at the Spartan Stadium game. One game was suspended due to poor pitch conditions. American Jill Rutten and Pisa player came through with her own personal goal to tie Bardolino 1-1.

Australian flu does in Lazio
Most of Italy has been hit hard by this winter's major illness known as the "Australian flu". The players have not been spared high fever temperatures as Lazio was without 6 players in its match against Picenum(whose National Team captain Antonella Carta along with Ulivi were also missing from the match). Three were due to injuries (including its star player Patrizia Panico with an injured shoulder) and 3 due to the flu.
Lazio coach Guenza had to deal also with the defection of 4 key players. On top of Morace's resignation. Fielding 3 teenage players in order to fill in the missing gaps was not enough as Picenum managed to squeeze by 3-2 on Lazio's home turf. First-place Milan breezed through its game winning 4-0 against Verona. It is now 6 points away from Lazio and 2 from second-place Torres (who will be hosting Lazio next week in a very difficult match for the Roman team).

Giorgia Brenzan's Milan is still in pole position after the 2-0 victory over Geas. Sergio Guenza in the meantime led Panico and Co. to an easy 5-2 victory over 2nd last Sarzana. Second place Torres squeezed by with a narrow 3-2 win in its away match against Bardolino while Jill Rutten managed to beat her former club Modena 3-0 with the help of her fellow Pisa teammates. National team member Patrizia Panico's two goals still keeps her ahead of the race for the title of leading goal scorer with 22 goals.
Many, including national teammate Manuela Tesse, seem to miss Carolina as head coach (4 Lazio players have walked out on the team because she is no longer coaching). Patrizia said that Carolina has so far been the best coach she's ever had (don't forget that last year they were also teammates at Modena). She didn't appear terribly optimistic about the future of female soccer in Italy.

MORACE "Graduates" with her 2nd level
Italian National Coaching License
By Mario Rimati
Carolina Morace not only has become the first woman to be the head coach of a 3rd division men's professional club in Italy, Viterbese (the news came about as the Italian national team was in the U.S. for the World Cup), a team located about 60 miles from Rome, but she has also successfully just passed all her examinations to become the first woman in Italy to hold the 2nd level national coaching license (the top level in Italy is 1st which allows one to coach 1st division male professional clubs). All Italian clubs have already begun their pre-season training so we'll wait and see how coach Morace will perform in the "big boys' league".

Comments from Brenzan as Italy focusses on World
Cup '99
With the long championship finally over (nearly 10 months) the national team players will be at the total disposal of head coach Carlo Facchin. Commencing June 2nd a training camp is scheduled in northern Italy followed by another training camp in Rome. The national team entourage will then depart for Los Angeles on June 14. And speaking of World Cups, how does newly-crowned champion Brenzan feel about what will be in store for her and her teammates? "Will I be ready for the event? Have I really done everything possible to be ready, both physically and technically? Will all the sacrifices that I've made this season during the championship and with the national team be enough to carry me through the tournament? The questions to my worries will only be answered once the competition has started. All I know is that I'm very happy and proud to be participating in a World Cup that has such a large following. I'm above-all happy at the idea of playing in front of crowds who are void of those pre-conceived beliefs that thrive in many countries where male soccer is highly evolved. Together with my teammates, I think I share in the common belief that we hope to be able to go far in the event which will not only be positive for the team as a whole but will also help to further attract the fans and the media to our sport. My last wish is that I hope that through this World Cup we'll be able to give more Italian women the opportunity of partaking in the world's greatest game".
May 25, 1999 from Mario Rimati
In other soccer-related news, Paolo Maldini's Milan won that club's 16th "scudetto" (championship title) in Italy's 1st division male soccer championship, just one point ahead of Lazio. It could perhaps be a first in the world of Italian soccer that the soccer teams of the city of Milan will both win the male and female championship titles. The answer will be known next week.
The national team is in a training camp as it will play its last international friendly match on May 26th against England in the town of Lugo just outside of Bologna.
January 25, 1999 from Mario Rimati
The "Old man of Italian female soccer" is back: 66 year-old Sergio Guenza, probably Italy's foremost expert on the game has taken over the helm of Lazio as head coach given Carolina Morace's "adieu" over financial matters. Some may recall that Guenza was, for many years, the head coach of the national team (with Carolina being its captain) and came 2nd behind Germany in the 1997 European championship final (eliminating along the way arch-enemy Norway with two goals by Morace). Guenza began his long coaching career with the Roman club, Italy's oldest female team, winning 4 "scudetti" (championship titles). Will this mean that one day he'll return as national team head coach? That remains to be seen? In the meantime, he declined from commenting specifically on Morace's resignation but added that her work up to now had been rather satisfactory and that he hopes to continue along that track with the help of the entire team. His hopes were materialized Lazio won 3-0 in an away game against Verona. The big upset came as Torres defeated Fiammamonza 7-2. Milan still commands 1st place with Torres and Lazio not too far away.
American Jill Rutten (former Modena player) is now playing for Pisa.
The big news this year is that at the helm of Lazio is former national team
captain Carolina Morace (12 championship titles to her name), but not as
a
player this time (at least not for the moment) but as head coach. There
are speculations that she'll be unable to sit permanently on the bench
for too long and will perhaps follow in the footsteps of her
predecessor, former national teammate Betty Bavagnoli, as the team's
player-coach, depending how Lazio performs this year.
Morace's debut on Lazio's bench was a positive
one, even though the team
ended up playing with 10 players due to a foul from behind. The game
against Picenum also saw the 1st division debut of 16 year-old Maria
Sorvillo who played several years with Roma's 2nd division team (the
team where I've been coaching the g.keepers for the last 3 seasons).
Carolina also fielded Bavagnoli for this important match. The head
coach was asked after the game her thoughts of watching the game from
the bench as opposed to the field: "I didn't really feel anything in
particular except for the fact of feeling slightly older. The girls
though did end up coming through for me."
Breakdown of the players who have moved from one club to another:
Brenzan (national g.keeper) Torres to Milan (Supercup
champions)
Madsen defender Lugo to Milan
Panico* forward Modena to Lazio
Tesse* midfielder Modena to Lazio
Nappi* g.keeper Modena to Lazio
Deiana defender Cascine to V.Torres
Tavalazzi defender Cascine to V.Torres
Guarino forward Cascine to V.Torres
Forlucci g.keeper Agliana to Torres
Sberti forward Pisa to Agliana
Salmaso defender Lugo to Modena
Miniati defender Torino to Picenum
Nannini defender Algiana to Picenum
Carta midfielder Lugo to Picenum
Ulivi forward Lugo to Picenum
*N.B. Morace's former teammates at Modena. The
team has lost several
players to other teams. For the last two seasons Modena has dominated
the standings and just last season won the championship with Morace. C.
Vica, last season's runner-up to Modena has dropped down to the 2nd
division due to financial problems.
The Serie A will pick up again in two weeks' time
as the national team
will meet at the technical training center in Coverciano.
Hopefully by that time Italy's new national team head coach will be
appointed (Sergio Vatta recently walked out on the team after a record 9
months). The probable candidate might be Carlo Facchin, the former head
coach of the five-a-side national (male) team.
The other news is that out of 90 referees involved
in the female
