Lazio bows to Tagliacarne in Super Cup

By Mario Rimati

With only 6 days away from the start of the Serie A championship, fans were treated yesterday to the Supercup final in the town of Orvieto (famous for its fine wines), a repeat of last season's championship final between Lazio and Foroni. The winner this time was Foroni thanks to two goals by Silvia Tagliacarne, a member of the USA1999 Squad.

Lazio paid a price as some of its top guns were not present, including its new/old player Manuela Tesse (Tesse played some season ago with Lazio, moved on to Foroni and now is back with the Roman team. Tesse was also part of USA99. Foroni’s two goals came at the 33rd and 17th minute respectively of the first and second half.

In other news, Lazio will be again on the field as the UEFA Women’s Cup will be played in Rome just prior to the start of the championship. Milene Dominguez, Ronaldo' wife will not be playing with Serie A team Fiammamonza as she has decided to follow her husband to Madrid were he has just recently signed with Real Madrid. Milene's option in the Spanish capital may be rival Atletico Madrid. She had apparently promised the Italian club located near Milan (and near her husband’Äôs former club Inter) that she would have in fact stayed even if Ronaldo were to have gone to Madrid but the family bonds (a son, Ronald) have prevailed. Her departure certainly means a drop in spectator attendance as no doubt her husband's presence at the games would have also attracted more media attention (which the women's game ALWAYS needs so desperately).

Finally, the other interesting news is that 33 year-old Cristina Cini will be the first woman ever to work as a linesperson in the men'sSerie A and B (second division) championship. Cini once worked as a referee but left it for the sidelines as she has found the work to be more interesting. Any problems so far working as a ref in the men's championship? "No, but what often happens as I show up to officiate a game with my male colleagues is that the stadium personnel ask me if I require a ticket. They think I am the ref's wife. Someone will even say ’ one of the linesmen is missing! Other than that, in spite of the chauvinistic world of Italian men's soccer, everyone so far has been rather respectful."
